I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

Howdy gang!

As the title says, I've updated the system, but I ended in BIOS settings. I have no idea what happened. In BIOS I can see that my SSD is not recognized anymore. I took it out, put it into external caddy and bam, it's working. I can access all the files.  I checked the SSD with smartomon tools and there were no errors:

Re: I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

I can see the HDD in BIOS now:

SATA mode selection:
Serial ATA port 0
Device type: Hard disk
Model name: Crucial_CT256MX100SSD1

Serial ATA port 1
Device type: Hard disk
Model name: Hitachi HTS727575A9E364

Serial ATA port 2
Device type: Atapi CDROM
Model name: Slimtype DVD A

What I did was:

e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/sdc1

e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/sdc2

But when trying to boot I still get:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key

Damn sad

Re: I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

If your bios didn't recognize the drive at all at any point, it sounds like a hardware problem. Did you try just booting a rescue cd and reinstalling your boot manager?

Yes, pacman -Syu. All what I can see under /var/log is this:

btmp lastlog private wtmp Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.old

There's no pacman log sad

Do you mean SSD firmware? I don't recall updating firmware.

Geez I'm looking in / and the following folders are empty:

Re: I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

All of these are normal, apart from /boot these all are populated during runtime dynamically by the kernel, so if you look at them from a live disk they will be empty. /boot will be empty if it's a separate partition (likely FAT if for an UEFI system).  What Piri likely meant with firmware was if you did an UEFI update (or for that matter, did your Windows run an update?)

From the symptoms we have so far I'd go with you having exclusively enabled UEFI boot and a Windows or firmware update cleared your NVRAM entries, which makes it look like the drive "disappeared" from UEFI. Properly reinstalling your bootloader of choice into the EFI partition should fix this.

FWIW post the output of

efibootmgr -v

Re: I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

V1del,

I don't use Windows. No UEFI update either. FWIW this was my previous fstab:

# /dev/sda1
UUID=1d804d09-a314-4b9a-a1ad-aec23a358f98	/         	ext4      	rw,relatime,data=ordered	0 1

# /dev/sda2

# /dev/sda3
UUID=6D87-8F61      	/boot     	vfat      	rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro	0 2

# /dev/sdb1
UUID=b9c7ba8f-0004-40aa-9bf5-3052fa816291	/var      	ext4      	rw,relatime,data=ordered	0 2

# /dev/sdb2
UUID=c6f1c83a-010c-4c2e-9b3c-9196466a0b80	/data     	ext4      	rw,relatime,data=ordered	0 2

From the symptoms we have so far I'd go with you having exclusively enabled UEFI boot and a Windows or firmware update cleared your NVRAM entries, which makes it look like the drive "disappeared" from UEFI.

I use only UEFI and as I mentioned before, I don't use Windows.

Re: I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

Well.. Sadly, the entire uefi implementation in this particular machine is to be honest a worst ever created mess.
You're not the one affected by such issues..
Just read here: http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Fe … ot-Process
All workarounds you can find on the net are just and only a workarounds. There is no real fix for this.
And worst of all, this problem will keep coming back again, and again, and again.. etc.

And in addition, what did you try? Did you already try to reinstall your boot loader? Which boot loader are you using, can you try readding an entry from your UEFI setup or are you really that unable to detect your  drive?

Did I mentioned something about a windoze? -> nope.
Please just understand and accept a simple thing. There is no fix or permanent workaround. -> this is an poorly-designed-hardware related issue. Read: unfixable.

I'm booting from an external CD/DVD player. In chroot this is what I get:

efibootmgr -v
BootCurrent: 0002
Timeout: 2 seconds
BootOrder: 0000, 0002, 0001

V1del>And in addition, what did you try?
Since I don't have a lot of time, not much. I updated the system and tried with:

bootctl --path=/boot install

After this, I can now see in BIOS under BOOT tab :

Boot Option #1 [Linux Boot Manager...]

But when I click on it:

Linux Boot Manager (Drive not present)

Which boot loader are you using,
systemd-boot

can you try readding an entry from your UEFI setup or are you really that unable to detect your  drive?
I can see the drive in BIOS,

Advanced [AHCI]

Serial ATA Port 0
Device type: Hard Disk
Model Name: Crucial_CT256MX100SSD1
Serial Number: 14360D2967F9

I don't know how to reaad entry to UEFI

FWIW,

/boot:
EFI initramfs-linux-fallback.img initramfs-linux.img intel-ucode.img loader vmlinuz-linux
/boot/loader/entries/arch.conf
Title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux

/usr/share/systemd/bootctl/arch.conf

Re: I've updated the system, I ended in BIOS

In your /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf:

root=/dev/sda1

Is a bad idea since the names can change.. (See your original post, your fdisck -l listed the drive as /dev/sdc)

You should use UUID or PARTUUID like in the template

root=PARTUUID=XXXX

XXXX is the PARTUUID you get via blkid

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/pe … ice_naming

sdc is seen because I used the SSD in another laptop via external hdd caddy.
sda1 is seen because I put it back into my affected lappy and chroot-ed.
