[SOLVED] Crippling performance and usability issues with linux 4.19.x

Yesterday I woke up to a very bad situation.

Finding the system nearly unusable, on instinct, I tried rolling back the kernel. Luckily 4.18.16 was still in pacman's package cache and rolling back did restore functionality.

Today I tried some other versions of the 4.19.x series. I experienced the same issues with the mainline kernel, linux-zen, and linux-ck-sandybridge (from repo-ck).

The performance degradation leads me to think it might be some kind of memory leak, but I am not using rtlwifi. I am also aware that 4.19.x is known to have reduced performance due to Spectre mitigations, but my case seems much more severe than what could be expected. I could use some help understanding what might be wrong here.

Note, it is difficult for me to provide technical details from the system while running with one of these kernels because:

1. Web browsers are unable to retrieve http data (this forum is inaccessible).
2. Any attempt to acquire SUID silently stalls forever (administrative actions and access are impossible)
3. Many programs do not run or run very slowly (top, for example, silently stalls forever)

Although TTYs never load, It is possible to get to a terminal by logging in to openbox and opening a graphical one, but it takes a very long time (there is a two minute delay between when lightdm is started and when its login prompt appears, a ten minute delay between entering the login name and password and when the desktop session initiates, and then subsequently run programs--such as the graphical terminal--are also very slow), and the system cannot be shutdown except by holding the power button on the case until it cuts out.

If there's something you would like to know about the system that I have to go in using a 4.19.x kernel to get, please consider that it may take a while for me to provide it, and that it comes at a risk to my hard drives.

I'll try to post every {kernel,module,hardware}-relevant technical detail I am aware of. Note that these configuration files and loaded modules represent the system in a functional state while running the 4.18.16 kernel, and that I have three third-party modules: vhba, earth_pt3, and nvidia{,_*}. These are the modules and configuration I intend to use with 4.19.x.

# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=(raid0 ext4 nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
#    HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
##   No autodetection is done.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS=(base udev resume autodetect modconf block mdadm_udev fsck filesystems keyboard keymap)

Re: [SOLVED] Crippling performance and usability issues with linux 4.19.x

Looks like you boot to graphical.target ?

If so, have you tried booting 4.19.x to multi-user.target or one of the recovery shells ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [SOLVED] Crippling performance and usability issues with linux 4.19.x

Skip of all of these:

vm.swappiness=0
vm.laptop_mode=5
vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=6000
vm.dirty_expire_centisecs=6000
vm.laptop_mode = 5

Fwwi, what do you *think* "vm.swappiness=0" does?

Re: [SOLVED] Crippling performance and usability issues with linux 4.19.x

seth wrote:

what do you *think* "vm.swappiness=0" does?

It disables swapping entirely; I have 16GB of memory and I don't usually do anything that makes use of it all. Although the amount of free memory is theoretically sufficient to make swapping unnecessary, I do this to ensure fewer hard disk reads and writes in case the kernel were to attempt to swap anyway (I have the impression it occasionally will with any higher setting). All of these are measures to reduce hard disk access.

Could 4.19.x really be incompatible with these settings? Also, what does 'fwwi' stand for?

Looks like you boot to graphical.target ?

I've never changed the default, so apparently that is so.

have you tried booting 4.19.x to multi-user.target or one of the recovery shells ?

I'll give it a shot, and come back to edit this post with results.

EDIT: Initial attempt at multi-user.target produced a login prompt on tty1, but entering a username and password stalled until it "timed out after 60 seconds" and then stalled forever. As with graphical.target, no other TTYs would open; system had to be shut down by holding the button on the case until the power cut out.

Before I get around to the recovery console, I'm going to try seth and V1del's suggestions. I don't expect to have much to do at the recovery console actually; nothing really seems to be broken so much as everything seems to be stuck in some kind of digital mud.

Re: [SOLVED] Crippling performance and usability issues with linux 4.19.x

Thought as much. "No, doesn't. Common misconception."
It will aggressively prefer dropping file caches and "0" is a particularily risky value provoking thrashing in OOM conditions (so risky in fact that it gets special cased by the VM) - in general: "don't".

I doubt there's "incompatibility" but your description sounds like an IO issue and the settings are related, so there might be unexpected effects by one of them and I'd rule that out.
Also check what modules are actually loaded but your scenario doesn't sound like eg. nouveau instead of nvidia.

Might also be an issue with the default switch to multiqueue and your drives having an issue with that, what happens if you boot with

scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0

?

Interesting. Most search results back up the "misconception" and almost every result to the contrary is particularly about MySQL getting killed in near-OOM conditions after the change was merged into RHEL's 2.6.32-303 kernel. I did find this discussion and this blog post that reveal more detail.

I don't think it's possible that I'm running out of memory before loading the desktop (slowdown starting in lightdm or earlier), but it is possible the system is responding badly to a spike in memory usage during the boot process.

Although I've never had a problem and have used this setting for years, I'll give vm.swappiness=1 a try and come back to edit this post with the results.

EDIT: vm.swappiness=1 changed nothing, but after reading that discussion I am tempted to unset this altogether (and spam every how-to on the internet recommending vm.swappiness=0 with a link to it). So, years ago, the nuance of "swappiness" changed from 'amount of' to 'nature of'; good to know. Not sure this will resolve the trouble I'm having; I don't see the HDD light blinking much while things are slow. If thrashing is happening, it isn't happening on disk. I'll try V1del's suggestion next, and then without any vm settings if that fails.

Also check what modules are actually loaded but your scenario doesn't sound like eg. nouveau instead of nvidia.

I do think the nvidia drivers loaded, or x wouldn't have started at all (unless it has become capable of ignoring config files when their specified drivers are not available; in the past I have known that situation to prevent x from starting). I'm going to put this check off for a while because it means going into a desktop session with no way out.

EDIT: No change.

Re: [SOLVED] Crippling performance and usability issues with linux 4.19.x

We had a discussion on this, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=231265 has also some further links.
If you want to totally prevent swap usage, don't have a swap device.
Swap isn't invoked unless you run (near) OOM, where "OOM" includes memory used by file caches, so by lowering the swappiness, you will reduce swapping out, but provoke re-reading files. There are benefits to this depending on the swap/file device type (because of the nature of the data and the performance of linear ./. random reads as well as asymmetric read/write performance) but they're complex and strictly depend on the actual HW and usecase, so you've to measure setups.
As a rule of thumb: lowering swappiness might be beneficial on *dumb* NAND devices (SD-cards, usb keys) as swap device, not because of performance, but to prevent writes on a limited cluster set. (This does NOT hold for SSDs!)

I resolved some of the udev errors with better rules, but it didn't change my situation.

I was also able to see top after waiting a very, very long time. Nothing was using significant CPU or memory, but It showed several instances of "throttle", which makes no sense as nothing is executing the script multiple times.

The situation seems to be triggered by throttle, which is my own script, being run by my own systemd service. Disabling the throttle service does allow me to boot with with 4.19.x and log in to a functional desktop session.

Line 104 sets block device autosuspend timeouts (/sys/block/*/device/power/autosuspend_delay_ms). This property appears to be broken in 4.19.x kernels. I still need to do testing to be sure this specific line in throttle is the cause of the performance and usability issues  I was having, but I can imagine getting stuck trying to set a hard disk setting causing serious IO problems.

Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time. I really appreciate the advice. It seems like this is (at least partially) my fault as I own the offending script, but perhaps the problem with the script is the result of a kernel bug.

I did look into what may have gone wrong with the kernel, but there are a lot of commits to sort through between 4.18 and 4.19.

drivers/base/power/sysfs.c states:

*    NOTE: The autosuspend_delay_ms attribute and the autosuspend_delay
*    value are used only if the driver calls pm_runtime_use_autosuspend().

I found this call has moved to a different file between 4.18 and 4.19:

I have yet to narrow down why this is broken or if it is broken for only my hard disk's drivers or across all disk drivers. For sure, my disks support this setting (they sound of a four-disk raid0 spinning down on a timer is unmistakable), and it was usable in earlier kernels. In the mean time, I'll try filing a bug on the kernel bugzilla, but not holding by breath for a fix.
