All,
Just noticed that both of my named servers do give at startup the error message "unable to set effective uid to 0: Operation not permitted". That would indicate that named process wants to be root, but I can't find the reason why. There seems to be no explanation at the (service) config file.
named process runs as user named, as I think it should do.
Why such a message then?
named is bind 9.13.5-1

How are you running named? Are you using the systemd service? Your not trying to run it as a --user service are you? It shoud indeed be started as root. It has the `-u named` parameter so that it will drop privileges as soon as it can and switch to user 'named', but it should be started (as root) via systemd.

Named is started via system with distro-set defaults. No modifications there.
This is something that has changed since 9.13.0-2; since downgrading to that version there has not been anymore these messages.

@Trilby does https://github.com/isc-projects/bind9/c … 97f4c4e120 seem a possible cause to you?
