KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

Well, that is more or less the problem. KDE closes and I get to the login screen. Really weird...

By journal you mean journalctl I assume?

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

That looks like a failed attempt to start a second X11 server, try Xorg.0.log.old an certainly your journal, yes ("sudo journalctl -b" after the incident)
Also elaborate on the "selection" thing, w/ the mouse, keyboard, kcharselect, … any client, only Qt clients, gtk clients, …

Edit, also check coredumpctl.

I guess it has something to do with those coredumps:

@seth: What do you mean by "selection thing"?

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

w/ the mouse, keyboard, kcharselect, … any client, only Qt clients, gtk clients, …

When do you select what where and how to trigger this. Any pattern?

The trouble seems to start here:

Xorg aborts (so get us a log of an X11 server that actually started) and then everything stumbles over the lost connection.
There's

@seth: Thanks, I will try it out next week. Have to study for an exam at the moment.

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

Here is my Xorg.0.log.old. I realized that I am also getting other crashes and segmentation faults, e.g. when I choose font config https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1829791 in systemsettings5 or GIMP. Could this be related?

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

You got quite a bunch of input devices attached and at least one of them (event8  - ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad) is acting up, possibly causing some overflow in the server?
I'd suggest to strip this to the bare minimum (cheapest mouse and keyboard you have) and see whether the problem still occurs.
If not (or if the crash is sufficiently reproducable), try to simply

xinput disable "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"

(that's a guess, look up the actual device name w/ "xinput list")

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

Why would I disable my touchpad and connect a cheap mouse and keyboard on my new ThinkPad X380? All of the devices are part of the laptop btw. There must be another solution

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

You could rebuild X and glibc with debug symbols to produce a more detail backtrace.
Edit:
I would suggest trying xorg-server first as if you build and install a broken xorg-server package only X11 will fail,  a broken glibc will require rescue media to fix the installation.

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

To quickly narrow down whether the error from the input device is the cause of the server crash, so we know what to focus on ("see whether the problem still occurs")…

The alternative is of course and indeed to build a fully debug enabled stack and get a meaningful backtrace as loqs suggested, I just wanted to see whether we can spare you this effort.

Ftr:

[ 4.669] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Logitech M325 (/dev/input/mouse4)
[ 4.674] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Wacom Pen and multitouch sensor Finger (/dev/input/mouse2)
[ 4.821] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Logitech K360 (/dev/input/event20)

For two of those I'm dead sure they're not part of your notebook and for the third I'm more than unsure whether it is.

[ 4.674] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Wacom Pen and multitouch sensor Finger (/dev/input/mouse2)

I think it is the ThinkPad Pen Pro for the ThinkPad X380 Yoga.

@seth: Yes, the Wacom Pen is part of the notebook. The logitech stuff isn't. I still don't understand what I am supposed to do now.

Re: KDE or X crashes when I select a special character like ä ú ö

If not (or if the crash is sufficiently reproducable), try to simply

xinput disable "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"

(that's a guess, look up the actual device name w/ "xinput list")

@seth: I tried disabling the touchpad, as you suggested, and the problem persists.

Well, if you did not only try but actually succeeded, we've no usable hint left what might crash the Xorg server and you'll indeed have to build a debug enabled binary to get a meaningful backtrace.
