Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

Not much else to say.  Computer suspended normally, but was completely off when I went to wake it up a couple of hours later.  Battery was full.  No messages journalctl after "PM: suspend entry (deep)".  Checking with linux-lts to see if the issue is present there.  Anyone else seeing similar behavior?

Beg to differ; post a full journal from the affected boot. Post whatever you're passing to your kernel command line as well. Are you using any power management software {TLP,LMT,powertop, etc.}? Do you have latest BIOS installed?

Help us help you.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

I have the same issue, it seemed to have started within the last few days.
I'm on the latest BIOS (1.9.0), kernel 4.20.3, and use TLP.
In plasma power management it is set to suspend on lid close. If I change it to do nothing, it does exactly that, but changing it back to suspend seems to shut the computer down.
I've tried https://askubuntu.com/questions/815117/ … -hibernate to no avail.

The one weird thing is that when I close the lid and it shuts down, when I open up the lid again, it start right up (no need to push the power button). If I shut down the computer normally, when I open the lid I do have to press the power button.

Yes, basically when you close the lid, the system is trying to suspend. When you open the lid the system is trying to resume, but due to the failed suspend the system instead powers back on immediately (reboot effectively).

I'd first try to take TLP out of the equation (completely remove and/or disable) and see if you get the same behavior.

Also, post a full journal and whatever you're passing to your kernel when booting so others here with more know-how can parse and assist.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

I went away for the weekend, and when I came back, suspend on lid close seems to work again. I don't remember changing anything or performing any updates, so I'm not sure what changed to make it work again.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

I'm likely experiencing something similar. I'm running 4.20.5-arch1-1-ARCH and it appears that my machine which is a Precision Workstation 5510 (pro variant of XPS 15 9550) appears to be rebooting instead of resuming after suspend when on battery.

I'm running BIOS 1.9.0 on that machine as well.

Things are very well behaved when plugged in suspend works fine as does hibernate.

The machine was suspended with the battery plugged in then unplugged, plugged back in and the lid was opened which appears to have resulted in a reboot instead of a resume.

Relevant section from the journal.

Would be keen to know if anyone else is experiencing this. I will try downgrading to the previous kernel package and will report back since I have a vague recollection of that working more effectively. Meanwhile if anyone else on similar hardware is on the previous kernel package any updates would be much appreciated.

Update
Shortly after I first posted this comment I suspended by closing the lid when connected to power. Opened the lid when on battery and the machine resumed instead of rebooting.
Next update I'll see if suspending on battery and resuming connected to power results in a resume or a reboot.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

I'm having a similar issue with my Dell E7470 running Fedora 29 and kernel 4.20.4-200.fc29.x86_64.

Jan 31 12:43:55 pc200230 systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.

Jan 31 12:43:55 pc200230 systemd-sleep[5407]: Suspending system...
Jan 31 12:43:55 pc200230 kernel: PM: suspend entry (deep)

Update: This is also happening with kernel 4.20.3 and 4.19.15 so I suspect it may not be a kernel issue.

Supposedly a similar issue to this was fixed in systemd

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

Okay somewhat vexingly, I got into EFI setup menu and changed one completely unrelated setting (related to virtualisation), saved the changes and rebooted and my machine has been behaving itself since then. Running BIOS/EFI Firmware 1.9.0. I have confirmed that this EFI settings change seems to have fixed resume from suspend with kernel 4.20.5-arch1-1-ARCH. I have also updated to 4.20.6-arch1-1-ARCH since then and suspend/resume are working okay when plugged in and on battery. While this is handy to have I'm somewhat confused as to why it was fixed by changing a totally unrelated setting.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

I think I solved the issue on my machine.  It seems that there was a loose screw inside of my laptop that was bouncing around when the laptop was packed up and moved.  Not sure why I didn't hear it rattling around in there earlier, but the problem seems to have gone away now that the screw has installed back in its proper place.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

Never mind, posted too soon.  The machine worked for several suspend/resume cycles, but I am now back to a dead laptop when suspending.  I need to write a script or something to sanitize the system log, but the last log entry for any failing suspend is simply

kernel: PM: suspend entry (deep)

I am seeing this behavior on both linux and linux-lts.  So it may be due to a backported change, which is something I have personally been bitten by in the past on this same machine (flickering display after suspend due to a graphics card driver "optimization" with respect to the display port interface).

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

I had this issue come back (almost 2 years later!) but I think I narrowed it down.

I think it started after I turned off systemd-swap, returned to a regular swap file and turned on hibernation. The problem seems to have stopped when I disabled hibernation again.

Re: Dell XPS 15 9530 shuts off in suspend under linux kernel 4.20

As it turns out the problem is not solved. After a little bit of the problem not presenting itself, I got another power down during sleep.

The end of the kernel log is sometimes different though, but nothing that points me to an exact cause.
