[solved] No VPN connection, but OpenVPN client shows no errors

Some of our digital sigange systems, which we administer via an OpenVPN network went offline on monday.
Nagios3 could not ping the systems and I could not connect to them via SSH or VNC.
After I restarted the VPN server, the systems in question went back online.
A view in the journals revealed nothing wrong with VPN.
What could have caused this error?

Solution:
The issue does not occur any longer.
