[Solved]Nvidia kernel module not receiving interrupts generated by GPU

Hello there, I'm looking for some help with an older Nvidia graphics card, the Geforce 8400 GS with a recent installation of Xorg and arch on the system in general. I had installed the following associated packages from pacman:

  • nvidia-340xx

  • xorg-server

  • xorg-xinit

  • xorg-twm

  • xorg-server-common

  • lightdm

  • lightdm-gtk-greeter

  • cinnamon

  • muffin

  • nemo

However, upon enabling the LightDM service and restarting the system, I was treated to a blinking cursor, and so I went and disabled the service and proceeded to run startx. Here are the results of that:

Looking at the section about enabling KMS for Nvidia cards here, it states to add the kernel parameter and four modules to the appropriate areas.

Now I believe I had done so in the proper areas, where I altered the following at /etc/default/grub and then generated a new grub.cfg by way of grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg :

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nvidia-drm.modeset=1"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

I had also altered the following at /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and ran mkinitcpio -p linux (but had received a warning stating nvidia_modeset and nvidia_drm could not be found):

MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)

After editing those files and generating the resulting files from there, I still get the same errors in the Xorg log. Furthermore, I installed the xf86-video-nouveau package with no success to being able to use startx properly.

Please let me know where I may be going wrong here, this is my first time working with an nvidia card and not an integrated graphics chip.

Re: [Solved]Nvidia kernel module not receiving interrupts generated by GPU

If you intend to keep using the nvidia blob, loose xf86-video-nouveau.
Also post the outputs of "lsmod" and "nvidia-smi".
Try the lts kernel, don't forget to install nvidia-340xx-lts.
Ensure you installed nvidia-340xx-utils and not eg. nvidia-utils ("pacman -Qs nvidia")

drm modesetting was introduced w/ 346.something and isn't available for your GPU/driver.

Thanks for the quick response, guys. Let me run through what I've done so far now.

I've installed linux-lts, nvidia-340xx-lts & -340xx-lts-utils, removed nouveau, nvidia-340xx and dependencies, generated another grub config, and ran the lts kernel. No luck yet, same error.

Here are the results from lsmod:

Here are the results from nvidia-smi:

Unable to determine the device handle for GPU 0000:02:00.0: The NVIDIA kernel module detected an issue with GPU interrupts.Consult the "Common Problems" Chapter of the NVIDIA Driver README for
details and steps that can be taken to resolve this issue.

The next steps I took were to use the following kernel parameters:

  • pci=noacpi - couldn't even get to a login prompt with this

  • pci=biosirq - Got to the login prompt & further, but startx still failed and gave the same error

  • noapic - Same results as above

  • acpi=off - got to the login prompt, but no devices like keyboard could be used.

From there, I shut the system down completely, opened up the case and removed a PCI card with firewire ports on it, resecured the casing and started things back up without the kernel parameters to no avail.

It looks like I may have made some progress though. After looking into MSI Interrupts, I added the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/nvdimm-security.conf :

I will edit this post again if messing with xinit resolves the rest of the problem.

Re: [Solved]Nvidia kernel module not receiving interrupts generated by GPU

Scratch editing the previous post. Startx is now functioning properly after installing xterm and removing xclock from my ~/.xinitrc .

So the problem was resolved through editing /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and at least adding nvidia to the MODULES line (though you may need to add nvidia_modeset, nvidia_uvm, and / or nvidia_drm as well) and running mkinitcpio -p linux (or what have you.) Next, (and what I think really made the difference for my system) was adding the following line to a file in the /etc/modprobe.d directory, I added it to nvdimm-security.conf since the file already existed:

options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0

I also cleared out all kernel parameters that I may have added into the default grub configuration file, generated that again, and rebooted the system. From there, running startx worked, and after enabling the DM and rebooting the system once more, the greeter and subsequently desktop environment now display properly.

My thanks go to you two as well as the fourth post in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=213080
