[RESOLVED] move non-essential packages out of base package group

Not sure whether this has been discussed before, though one thing I dislike archlinux is that the default installation has too many bloatware (To be fair, it's still better than some other distros, like ubuntu/fedora).

Would it be better if we move some obvious non-essential software (dhcpcd, netctl, madam, reiserfsprogs, xfsprogs, jfsutils, nano and vi to name a few) out of base group (either create new group base-extra, or just remove them from the list)? This way, arch linux will provide the minimal base system, configured by the user to only add what is purposely required.

Actually some ppl just use "pacstray -i" to install packages they really want, or remove those unnecessary package after installation.

Any thoughts?

Just to clarify what Allan said, it is actually the arch-dev-public mailing list you should read.  The one he mentioned is only available to developers.  And yes, this is probably going to get done according to what I have read in the discussion, but right now the developers are still hammering out exactly which packages are needed and how to implement this.  https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/a … 29435.html   https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/a … 29452.html

I second the original proposal and am happy that there's obviously an active discussion going on amongst the developers regarding this topic. Especially netctl as a "basic" package is a thorn in my side.

Thanks everyone for the information. I feel we should have this in FAQ, so I added it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fr … ase_group?
If moderator feel it's not a good FAQ topic, feel free to remove.
