[WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Dear fellas,

After I fresh install, I was about to configure the "details" inside gnome-control-center. As soon I clicked on it, it got close immediately and from that point I could even open it.

WORKAROUND "FIX"

Doing this, you gonna reset things up..

Same issue here, Details caused it for me. Running the following helps:

$ dconf reset -f /org/gnome/control-center/

So..

$ dconf reset -f /org/gnome/control-center/

However, every time you click on "Details", things gonna mess up again..

So the best thing to do, for now, if you gonna use "Details" or correlated things is one of the following workarounds bellow:

Had the same problem.  Downgrading package glib2-2.60.0-1 to glib2-2.58.3-1 fixes the problem.

Please build and check 2.58.0 and 2.60.0 locally assuming the former is good and the later is bad then test bdc9328bdf5ebb7f52f947354e2b14fedde0035b.

as a newbie, i can confirm this works. For reference command to downgrade:
pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/ … pkg.tar.xz

sidelined point, if you upgrade again with pacman -Syu (for example) this package will get updated again.

Until glib2 get the proper fix.

BTW, it's advised and smart to skip package glib2 from being upgraded until glib2 get fixed.

So edit:

$ sudo gedit /etc/pacman.conf

edit:

# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
IgnorePkg   = glib2
#IgnoreGroup =

The verbose brought :

$ gnome-control-center --verbose

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

dmesg:

[  622.414723] gnome-control-c[3158]: segfault at fffffff8 ip 00007f6b81a71f41 sp 00007ffc22118210 error 4 in libc-2.28.so[7f6b81a0e000+14b000]

Also, FYI, into a HP Envy laptop, using bumblebee, nividia and xf86-intel-video.

Anyone has experienced this issue?

I was wondering if it didn't pop up due to some parameter inside "Details" is messed or missing.. otherwise, why does it alone would close? No other app has caused any issue so far.

Any fix to that?

Look at/post the details of this core dump. I remember, though don't know if that has been fixed already, that some form of gnome-control-center had a crash issue when checking a certain setting and not having avahi-daemon started, so you might want to try that.

Thank you very much for the tip. I did try it, but unfortunately it didn't work.

I got the same results..

Re: [WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I've posted a link containing instructions to properly analyze a core dump, without having a backtrace of the actual crash this will be hard to diagnose.

Re: [WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Thanks for the reply.
I fear that is not the case, since I'm using gnome-control-center inside Gnome environment itself.
Also, I tried to reinstall some libs that, according to the log, seems to be missing. However, it didn't work at all.
Running out of options here..
Anyone else have any clue on this issue?

Re: [WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

If you create a new user does that user also experience the issue?

I just created a new user and the issue had gone.. until I did a click on gnome-control-center/"Details".. from that point the issue started over again.

FYI. when I created the new user, I picked some logs and all clear.. no Segfault or whatever missed libs constant early..

Which hp laptop do you have? Do you use bumblebee, alongside with nvidia and intel video? I wonder if is it a gpu related issue interacting with gstreamer or something else..

HP 15-g224nl, no nvidia/intel GPU, I've an AMD A8 with integrated AMD graphics and a dedicated AMD graphics, and I've done the same arch installation with gnome on my desktop computer and run without issues, I suspect it's something directly related to HP hardware, maybe some motherboard detail or similar

It could be.. however, I don't see how this theory could fit without gpu relation instead.. since you are running on amd.. I think that is something else. I just wonder when did you proceed your arch installation?

Re: [WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Do you guys realized when this issue was triggered?
In my case, it just starts when I click on "Details", otherwise I can access the gnome-control-center without any problem.

For me it's 100% of the time. Clicking on it in the overview, right-clicking on the desktop, or running from the console.

I had org/gnome/control-center/last-panel set to info-overview. Clearing that value in dconf DID in fact
allow me to go to other pages, but clicking "Details" crashed my system again like it did for erickwill.

I additionally seem to have an "WARNING: App 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' exited with code 1" leading into "Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.Shell.desktop" shell crash in journalctl, although I'm typing this logged in to GNOME right now.

Same issue here (gnome, lenovo, intel).
Each time I select "Details" the crash occurs.
I need to reset "org.gnome.ControlCenter last-panel" in dconf to be able to use the gnome-control-center again (as long it is set to "info-overview" it will crash again).

I started a fresh install two days ago, so a lot is going on, and I cant recall when it stopped working.

Re: [WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Same problem for me. Intel i5, nvidia GTX460, asus motherboard.
Updating the system yesterday (9th of March) started the issue.
I used Timeshift and restored to 7th of March and there was no problem then...
Just wait for fresh update??

Same issue here. Using a Lenovo Thinkpad T470, Intel HD 620. It happened after clicking the 'Details' tab.

Same problem here. Clicking on the 'Details' tab crashes gnome-control-center. Was working yesterday, before the last updates (glib, xorg-xprop,...)

Re: [WORKAROUND] Gnome-control-center - Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Had the same problem.  Downgrading package glib2-2.60.0-1 to glib2-2.58.3-1 fixes the problem.
