Black Screen when booting Lenovo Z50-75

Hi there,

I have no really deep insight to my problem, but maybe you can help me.

A few weeks now, when I try to boot my Lenovo Z50-75 Notebook (which I have used with arch linux for years now) the screen keep black.  The normal boot is that the camera light blinks and the backlight also can be seen to start.  Now it does nothing.  I can recover this, when I press the power button (when on battery) for some time, lets say 15-45 seconds, this is variable. I don't know what exactly is happening.

I guess the power button resets som bios cache or something, so the screen gets to be on.  I guess also its the 5.x kernel upgrade. Seems that the software (which ever this is) sets something that it doesn't start correctly, this happens also when rebooting (sudo reboot or systemctl reboot), there is a black screen.

I had a boot problem a few days ago, which could be solved by booting with usb and reinstalling 'linux' in a arch-chroot environment on my laptop.  Interestingly the boot worked fine when the kernel could not be loaded, every reboot during the problem solving did not make any troubles with the screen.

Please tell me where to look and how to find a solution, I really do not know where to start.

Thanks,
- Martin

So does downgrading the kernel fix things?

What is your graphics hardware and which drivers are you using?

That's a bit vague: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855

If you have a separate /boot partition then make sure it is mounted correctly during kernel upgrades.

Re: Black Screen when booting Lenovo Z50-75

I have what I believe to be the same problem.

After I upgraded to Linux 5, it wasn't able to get to the login screen (just black). I rebooted, and it booted with

nomodeset

set, and I was able to boot to a tty and reinstall Linux 4.20. It then booted normally.

Hardware: Dell XPS 15 9570

OK, so that suggests a problem with the i915 kernel driver, I presume you have an Intel graphics card?

You can try a git bisect to narrow down the source of the problem and then report it upstream.

This thread includes more instructions and a PKGBUILD supplied by loqs that can automate the process to some degree:

Re: Black Screen when booting Lenovo Z50-75

For @russelltg with the XPS more than likely related to the following thread:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=244917

might be the same for the OP though all of the affected machines in the thread were Dells.

Re: Black Screen when booting Lenovo Z50-75

Hi there,

this does not solve my original problem.

$ lspci -v | grep -e VGA -e 3D -A 10
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Kaveri [Radeon R6/R7 Graphics] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Lenovo Kaveri [Radeon R6/R7 Graphics]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 28
        Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        Memory at f0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=8M]
        I/O ports at 4000 [size=256]
        Memory at f0b00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: radeon
        Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu

So i have no intel and no i915 issue.

Also a downgrade to the latest linux 4.x kernel does not work.

Any other sugestions?  I'm really so far away from the solution I have no idea which information else to give to you...

Re: Black Screen when booting Lenovo Z50-75

Somewhere I found that it could have to do with xorg, so I tried to restart without xorg, by disabling xdm-arch.service.  But also there, when I try to

sudo reboot

, the scrren is black again.  Just pressing the power button for a long time, that seems to reset the bios somehow, makes the screen displaying something again.

Re: Black Screen when booting Lenovo Z50-75

I changed this now, no i get

Kernel driver in use: amdgpu

and also changed the xorg-config to amdgpu.  Works fine, but doesn't change my original probem.  Also modprobe - blacklisting

blacklist uvcvideo
blacklist acpi_call

does not make any change.

Any other suggestions I could try?

Thank you for so much hints!
