nvidia-settings not opening!

Hello all!

When I attempt to open the NVIDIA X Server Settings, I get the following error:

ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

I have ran it using sudo and without, but it yields that same result

I'm using the nvidia-ltsdriver package from the AUR and have tried the nvidia and nvidia-beta  packages as well, with still the same result.

When I execute nvidia-smi, it shows me the following:

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

This leads me to believe that my drivers are installed and working.

What should I be doing to get NVIDIA X Server Settings to actually open?

(I am using the XFCE4 DE/WM, if that helps.)

Thank you for your help!

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

Welcome to the boards nzn.

The nvidia-smi output tells you that the device is off, is this an Optimus laptop? Look at available configuration options in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

FWIW if that is insufficient to get what you have to do post

lspci -k
pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs libgl

and a Xorg log

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

I have the same problem: ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system (when starting nvidia-settings).

Fully updated Arch Linux

$lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"

GCC version: gcc version 8.2.1 20181127 (GCC)

The Intel graphics is disabled in UEFI (Bios). But I have a feeling this can still be a possible reason to this and other problems that I am having with the nvidia driver.

$glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

@Bluemango there's every evidence that intel is not disabled in your UEFI, double check that, and please open a separate thread should this not be sufficient, it is uncertain whether you actually have the same issue.

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

A bit of a necrobump and a thorough read through the wiki will probably get you there, but a helpful pointer: if you're on Optimus (integrated intel GPU + discrete nvidia GPU) then depending on your setup, running nvidia-settings may not run it using nvidia GPU. In my case, using Bumblebee, you need to use optirun, and in the case of nvidia-settings need to tell it which X display to use, e.g.:

sudo optirun nvidia-settings -c :8

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

Hi,

I hope, this doesn't count as necrobumping, since i have probably the same issue as nzn and this thread isn't closed, or should i have just created a new thread?

I'm getting the same error, while trying to start nvidia-settings:

$ nvidia-settings -V
WARNING: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

While the monitor and all the desktop experience is just working right and also cuda-programs are working, it's probably because the NV-CONTROLL extension fails to load into the Xorg server (libxnvctrl).
This is also seen in the Xorg log, that the nvidia xorg extension NV-CONTROL is not launching because of errors.

[   205.844] (II) Initializing extension NV-CONTROL
[ 205.844] (EE) Not enabling extension NV-CONTROL: maximum number of events or errors exceeded.

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

That warning indicates that you need to specify which X display nvidia-settings should use. For me it's :8 and so the command that works is nvidia-settings -c :8.

You can list all of your X displays with the following command:

(cd /tmp/.X11-unix && for x in X*; do echo ":${x#X}"; done)

Mine shows :0 (my normal display) and :8 (GPU-powered).

However, the output of your nvidia-smi command shows 3 processes (2 Xorg which is maybe weird, mine only shows 1 when in use, and openscad) that are currently using the GPU, so by all accounts your GPU appears to be working and in use.

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

Thanks for your answer. I'm starting my Xserver with startx and .xinitrc so i can have mutliple users with an X session at the same time, that's why there are 2 Xorg entries. Your command got me:

$ (cd /tmp/.X11-unix && for x in X*; do echo ":${x#X}"; done)
:0
:1

Probably one for each session?? I startet an X session on tty3 for a third user and got an :2 entry.
Even with this addition nvidia-settings isn't starting with different error messages:
Logged in at tty1

$ nvidia-settings -V -c :0
WARNING: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system
$ nvidia-settings -V -c :1
No protocol specified
ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system

And with the user on tty2

$ nvidia-settings -V -c :1
WARNING: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system
$ nvidia-settings -V -c :0
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system

I've tested the same things with the third user on tty3 and got:

$ nvidia-settings -V -c :0
No protocol specified
ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system
$ nvidia-settings -V -c :1
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system
$ nvidia-settings -V -c :2
WARNING: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

How do i identify the GPU-powered display and what is this MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE?

Thanks for your help!

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

It looks like you have a different issue than I had, not sure about OP, but unfortunately I'm at the limit of my limited knowledge about this! Those new error messages look like some good search terms to dig around for.

Re: nvidia-settings not opening!

I finally found the source of the error. Apparently the Xorg server has a threshold of errors and events that can occure on startup. When it is reached it will stop starting the extension. I was also using the vnc extension of X11 and in addition with NV-CONTROL this threshold was reached. After disabling the vnc server I was able to start nvidia-settings without problems. To have both enabled, it is recommended to patch the Xorg server to disable some build in extensions (https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … -drivers-/). I just disabled the vnc extension and I will not try this patch, so I can't verify if it works, but I wanted to add it for completion.
