Setting up a mail relay

I have an Eaton UPS with the following settings available:
fpZx98X.png

As you can see it doesn't support any TLS settings and so the mails never go through. I also have set up msmtp on my Archlinux VM which emails me SMART reports and configuration backup emails and was wondering if I could use my Archlinux box as a mail relay to simply forward the emails from the UPS to my email address.

I read up the mail server wiki, but that didn't clarify what I would need to do in order to achieve a relay

What would I have to set up in order to achieve this?

Re: Setting up a mail relay

465 (looks preconfigured?) is smtps, why would that not work? 587 would be starttls.

You'd need an MTA, they're all rather fat beasts (msmtp is a nice MUA, that doesn't help you here) and you've to make ABSOLUTELY sure that they're ONLY OPEN TO THE LAN. If you open a relay to the WAN, it will turn into a spam-slinger very fast, esp. if you go for unsecured authentication.

But again, I'm not convinced that you need an unsecure relay, 1st because that (oversized…) screenshot doesn't suggest so and 2nd because that's nuts. Virtually nobody could ever use this feature then.

Re: Setting up a mail relay

Have you checked to make sure the firmware is up to date?

Edit0: Applicable thread?

Relevant part...

I finally got this to work, using the IP for the unrestricted smtp gmail server aspmx.l.google.com. I have to use the IP for aspmx.l.google.com because it's intermittent when using aspmx.I.google.com. I'm using Google's DNS servers, so I'm not sure why it's intermittent. I just purchased 3 of these Eaton 5PX 2200 with the network-MS cards, and would have went with a different manufacture if I knew that they weren't compatible with SSL.

There is an image there that looks like what you posted.

Edit1: This might help...

Re: Setting up a mail relay

Thanks Zod.

The first thread suggested a couple of things. I tried the aspmx.l.google.com as the SMTP address and even the IP, but I still didn't receive any emails. I am going to create a new less secure account and try that out next.

I am wary of upgrading the firmware -- because EATON in it's manual has big red lettering indicating that firmware upgrade can go wrong and brick the UPS. That would be a whole lot of money down the drain just to get email functionality going. But maybe if nothing else works...

Re: Setting up a mail relay

Don't forget to check your spam bucket.

Are you getting any kinda feedback?

Edit0: You could also use telnet to talk to the email server and see what it wants.

Re: Setting up a mail relay

What if instead of having the UPS to push data via smtp you pull the data using https://networkupstools.org?

Yeah I am already doing that using my FreeNAS box. I get the UPS status from a script that I run via cron. However, I am not sure how to pull the information based on UPS events -- like "voltage out of regulation" or when the UPS switches from AC to battery and vice-versa.

Maybe I need to dig more into the NUT to see if that is possible. It could be that I missed it.

Re: Setting up a mail relay

https://networkupstools.org/docs/man/upsmon.html lists support for executing a command for some events.
