[Solved] Struggling to get sound working on Dell G3 laptop

The sound worked on ubuntu, now it doesn't. I have pulse-audio, etc. installed (and I put /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 into .xinitrc so it starts with the xserver)
I haven't really found any useful help by searching with duckduckgo. It is all largely irrelevant.

I am also having an issue where I cannot change my screen brightness. I set up i3 keyboard shortcuts using the OEM keys ("bindsym XF86MonBrightnessUp exec xbacklight -inc 20" and "bindsym XF86MonBrightnessDown exec xbacklight -dec 20" respectively), although I suspect that I probably just need an alternative to xbacklight to fix that issue.

Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere.
Thanks for all help in advance.

EDIT: I think I should clarify: I am trying to use only either the 3.3mm jack or the laptop speakers. I have no additional monitors connected (so no accidental audio over HDMI), and this arch install is pretty fresh; pretty much worked out of the box (once I realised to use wifi-menu and to then download that onto the new system while still chrooted in). I must say that the Arch wiki seems to be very detailed!

Sorry if this question is in the wrong forum section.

Solution: create a .asoundrc file in your home directory according to this article.

Welcome to the forum. Please read How to Post and Post Complete Logs. Also search the forum for topics containing the word "sound" in the title to see what kinds of information other people have posted and requested to help solve these problems. You really have not given us much to work with.

Moving to Newbie Corner.

1. Please read the Code of Conduct, notably https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post and edit your title to remove the redundant noob question marker.

2. Read the pulse page on the wiki: you do not start it in xinitrc. It also has troubleshooting steps that will produce error messages.

3. Again, in the Code How to Post section it makes it clear not to open omnibus threads. Remove the brightness stuff to a separate thread.

Thank you sir. I will look there and update tomorrow if I managed to fix this issue.

edit:I didn't understand much of what was there.
