[SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

I just bought the new Dell XPS 15 7590 (2019) laptop, and I wanted to install Arch Linux on it in place of Windows. I knew that it being new hardware could pose some challenges, but I believed that a distro running the latest Linux kernel would mitigate the problems. Case in point, the new Dell XPS 15 ships with a Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 wireless network adapter. This is really just a rebranded Intel AX200 chip, which has supposedly had kernel support since version 5.1. Unfortunately, the Killer AX1650 doesn't advertise itself as an Intel AX200. So, it wasn't until Linux 5.2 that the Killer AX1650 was able to be properly detected.

So, I made and saved off a disk image of the Windows installation, and I proceeded to boot up the Arch Linux Live environment. I was able to complete the basic installation of an Arch Linux system on the Dell XPS 15 7590 using an ethernet dongle, and when I booted into the newly installed Arch Linux, I was happy to find:

$ uname -r
5.2.0-arch2-1-ARCH

I was very excited when I saw:

$ ip addr show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 ::1/128 scope host
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: wlp59s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether d0:ab:d5:15:54:00 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Also, checking iw dev:

$ iw dev
phy#0
	Interface wlp59s0
		ifindex 2
		wdev 0x1
		addr d0:ab:d5:15:54:00
		type managed
		txpower 0.00 dBm
		multicast TXQ:
			qsz-byt	qsz-pkt	flows	drops	marks	overlmt	hashcoltx-bytes	tx-packets
			0	0	0	0	0	0	0	0

However, I noticed that the interface was DOWN. So, I proceeded to try to bring it up:

$ ip link set wlp59s0 up
RTNETLINK answers: Connection timed out

So, then I was disappointed, and I began to poke through things to see what was wrong. The first thing I checked was lspci to see what it was saying about the network adapter and the module/driver being used. I've abbreviated the output to just the network adapter, but if anyone needs to see additional output, just let me know.

$ lspci -v
...
3b:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 2723 (rev 1a)
	Subsystem: Bigfoot Networks, Inc. Device 1654
	Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
	Memory at ed400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
	Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 3
	Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
	Capabilities: [40] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
	Capabilities: [80] MSI-X: Enable+ Count=16 Masked-

	Capabilities: [14c] Latency Tolerance Reporting
	Capabilities: [154] L1 PM Substates
	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
	Kernel modules: iwlwifi
...

So, it is definitely picking the correct driver. I then checked dmesg for iwlwifi. I saved the entire dmesg output if further information is needed from there.

$ dmesg | grep iwlwifi
[    2.481359] iwlwifi 0000:3b:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)

This output makes me think that it has correctly identified the network adapter as a Killer AX1650, and is loading up the iwlmvm firmware, which is correct according to the Linux Wireless Wiki.

I then checked dmesg for firmware:

$ dmesg | grep firmware
[ 0.168772] Spectre V2 : Enabling Restricted Speculation for firmware calls

[  417.291919] iwlwifi 0000:3b:00.0: Loaded firmware version: 48.13675109.0

I have checked rfkill to see if something was blocking the wireless network adapter, but nothing showed up there:

$ rfkill list
0: hci0: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

I looked at lsmod to see if the modules were loaded:

$ lsmod | grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi               380928  1 iwlmvm
cfg80211              839680  3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211
$ lsmod | grep iwlmvm
iwlmvm                454656  0
mac80211              983040  1 iwlmvm
iwlwifi               380928  1 iwlmvm
cfg80211              839680  3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211

I did see that there is an Arch Wiki page concerning the Dell XPS 15 7590, and it does have a Wifi section. However, I have seen these instructions before on the Killer Networking support site. However, since I'm running Linux 5.2, and it is properly detecting the Killer AX1650, I don't think I need to build the iwlwifi driver or pull in firmware. I think that the driver and firmware in Linux 5.2 and the latest linux-firmware package are already current. I have also tried disabling bluetooth in the BIOS to make sure that bluetooth wasn't interfering with the wireless network adapter, but no joy.

Can anyone see what might be causing me to not be able bring up the detected wlp59s0 interface? If there is anymore information that you need me to provide, please let me know. Thank you for any help you can provide!

You could try disabling power saving https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … on#iwlwifi or using the git firmware package to see if that helps.

Same error. It should be noted that Wifi works well on Linux 5.1.16 following the instruction given on the Killer support site.

On Linux 5.1.16

$ lsmod | grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi               417792  1 iwlmvm

On Linux 5.2.0 the dmesg gives something different. I've taken a photo but did not take a copy, the message is something like this:

Even if you backport and do some compiling stuff things doesn't change.

Some relevant issues : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=247575
But in my case downgrading linux-firmware alone doesn't work. And when running Linux 5.1.16 with the latest linux-firmware (linux-firmware 20190628.70e4394-1) there is no issue.

Moreover, it seems that on Linux 5.2 iwlwifi-Qu-b0-hr-b0-48 or some other firmware is being tried to be loaded, while one that is ought to be loaded is iwlwifi-cc-a0-48; I have downgraded the kernel to 5.1.16, so I cannot confirm.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

Hey, @Noxult, thank you for the reply. I followed the link you posted to bbs.archlinux.org, and following that rabbit trail, it seems like there are updates coming to iwlwifi which will hopefully fix this problem, though I'm not sure how long before they will be in a released version of the kernel. Hopefully, it will all work in the next release of the 5.2.x series. In the meantime, I was going to try doing as you suggested and use Linux 5.1.16. However, that immediately presented a few problems.

  1. How can I even get the Arch package for Linux 5.1.16, as it no longer appears in the Core repository? (The branch does exist in the Arch git repo.)

  2. Once I have the Arch Package for Linux 5.1.16, how do I apply the patch referenced on the Killer Networking website?

  3. Does Arch have a special way that they make the kernel and modules and get them installed?

Sorry, I know that's a lot of info to ask. I've never patched the Linux kernel, and the last time that I configured and compiled Linux was many years ago on Gentoo. So, I'm rusty, and I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of building packages on Arch. If there's any way you can help or point to the Internet documentation that you use when doing this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@rbrinson

1. Arch_Linux_Archive#Finding_packages_in_the_Historical_Archive
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … al_Archive
2. Just follow the procedure given by the arch wiki page of DELL XPS 15 7590
3. In fact I am also new to Arch, so, I don't know.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

Hey, @Noxult and/or @loqs. I just saw that Linux version 5.2.1 was just dropped a couple of hours ago in the Arch Linux git repo. I don't think it is in the Core package repository yet, but when it hits, would one of you mind checking out whether or not the Arch build of Linux 5.2.1 with the current linux-firmware package will just work out of the box with the killer ax1650 wireless network adapter. I would check it myself, but after unsuccessfully trying to create an Arch package for Linux 5.1.16 with the patch from the Killer Networking website, I decided to reinstall the Windows image that I made with Clonezilla before starting the process of installing Arch. I figured I will just have to wait for working killer ax1650 support to make its way into the iwlwifi kernel module and/or the linux-firmware package. Thank you!

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

I don't see any iwlwifi changes in the 5.2.1 release compared to 5.2.0. The killer firmware loading patch is already included in 5.2.0.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … .2..v5.2.1

There are changes in git tree for 5.3,

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … .2..master

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@progandy, thank you for the links, but that is unfortunate. I know that the patch for loading the killer ax1650 firmware was added to the 5.2.0 kernel, and the boot process does properly identify the hardware. However, the firmware fails to load for some reason. There's definitely a problem either with the kernel module as shipped in 5.2.0 or in the 20190628.70e4394-1 linux-firmware package.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@progandy perhaps in prepare() `git cherry-pick -m 1 237f83dfbe668443b5e31c3c7576125871cca674` to cherry-pick the 5.3 net merge?
This would limit the amount of new material,  although it is still very large.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@loqs: maybe, or is it possible to merge one of the iwlwifi trees or maybe somehow use the backports? I have never done that, so I don't know the process for that. https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … t/iwlwifi/

@rbrinson: As for firmware, you could try the package 20190514.711d329 or remove usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-cc-a0-48.ucode to force use of the -46 firmware.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@progandy Now I have a Linux 5.1.16 running using the newest firmware available (that is, using the backports) without any wireless connection issue, while running Linux kernel 5.2 with the same setting and the same firmware(even if I backported again with the same procedure I followed when on Linux 5.1.16) throws out the error aformentioned, so it is highly probable that something is wrong with the kernel not the firmware. Moreover iwlwifi-cc-a0-48.ucode works perfectly on kernel 5.1.16.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

HI, @Noxult, I didn't know if you had noticed, but packages for linux-5.2.1 and a newer linux-firmware (20190712.d52556e-1) have been dropped into the Core repository. If you have the time and are willing, would you mind testing to see if the Killer AX1650 will work with this new kernel and firmware combination? Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@progandy I tried backports which has the common issue of expecting python to be python2 I was able to get it to produce a backport that failed against 5.2.1
due to https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … 627c307110 while backports uses https://www.spinics.net/lists/backports/msg04680.html
even if I patch that then it fails due to 5.2.1 not having https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … cc800d3f5b

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@rbrinson Gave a try and still no luck. Same dmesg output.
And again I've pacman -U ed solely the linux kernel leaving the newest firmware untouched, everything works fine on kernel 5.1.16.

I can also verify on a Dell XPS 15 7590 that 5.1.18 can see and use the card, but 5.2.1 does not work.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

Hey, @tomberek. I'm trying to follow the instructions on the Arch Wiki page for the Dell XPS 15 7590, and build the backport-iwlwifi repository with the current 5.2.1 kernel. Unfortunately I am getting an error during the 'make -j4' command. It says:

make[4] *** [Makefile:1595: backport-iwlwifi] Error 2
make[3] *** [Makefile.build:6: modules] Error 2
make[2] *** [Makefile.real:100: modules] Error 2
make[1] *** [Makefile:43: modules] Error 2

Did you run into anything like this? do you or anybody else have any idea as to what the problem could be? Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@rbrinson Oh I think the wiki page could be somehow misleading for it was written when the latest kernel available was 5.1.16. I don't think building it on 5.2.1 will help, since I've done that already.
As for the error you're now encountering, it is rather strange.. I've also got that error message when trying to make -j4 it (cloned about a week ago),then I re-cloned the repo and followed the procedure again, the error is gone.
I compared the output and found these lines in the ouput of the failed attempt

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

Progress with 5.2.1:
Using https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … rmware.git
on revision: bf13a71b18af229b4c900b321ef1f8443028ded8
then:

rm /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-cc-a0-48.ucode

And wireless works. It seems the cc-a0-48 would get loaded by mistake and perpetually fail, cycling the card. Remove cc-a0-48 and cc-a0-46 gets loaded.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@tomberek Thanks for the information, I'll give it a try.
Seems that there are some collision between the newer kernels and firmware version 48. For '[    2.744043] iwlwifi 0000:3b:00.0: loaded firmware version 48.13675109.0 op_mode iwlmvm' the 48th version firmware works perfectl on older kernels.

==================

Yes, it works. You don't even need to build the newest firmware, just pacman -Syu and remove the version 48 ucode and reboot.
For the time moment one should avoid updating the linux-firmware package, or should remove the ucode 48 file after each update of the package.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

@tomberek and @Noxult, I can also confirm that removing or renaming the /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-cc-a0-48.ucode file that is installed with the linux-firmware_20190712.d52556e-1 package allows me to use wifi-menu to scan for and connect to my access point on Linux 5.2.1. This is not a perfect solution, but hey, I can ping google and run pacman! This linux-firmware package is already flagged as out-of-date in the Arch packages repository. So, maybe the next release will be better...but probably not! At least we now know how to get to a working state for the Killer AX1650 on the XPS 15 7590.

Re: [SOLVED] Killer AX1650 Wireless Adapter Not Working on Linux 5.2.0

Oh it should be noted that the latest kernel just doubles the energy consumption under normal usage, like from 6W to 13W, and the CPU package temperature easily exceeds 50 celcius while on kernel 5.1.16 it was around 45 celcius.. It is just like running windows.
