Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

This happened for quite a long time and the entire system is fine except this.
The laptop has 2 gpus: Intel HD 5500 (working) and Radeon R5 M230 (not working)

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

Your card appears to be of the gcn 1st gen family, could be an kernel module problem.

post lspci -k please, also dmesg and/or journal from a boot.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Sorry but I am not sure what you mean by dmesg/journalctl from last boot, do you want my entire boot log from journalctl? But that's huge
I just ran dmesg anyways

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

First, use [ code ] tags for such content instead of quote tags, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

dmesg is fine, journalctl has many filter options[1]  that can ease troubleshooting .

Which card is set as primary (aka boot first)  in uefi/bios firmware, amd or intel ?

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

There is no option to select which GPU to boost first in BIOS. But I guess it's Intel?
i have an option to select whether the Radeon is enabled/disabled, obviously I set it to enabled smile

Please do let me know if you need me to do anything, this is a bug for ages, it has been here since I first touched linux when I used Ubuntu 17.10
It works when I used Windows on this laptop, but not on linux.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

That suggests this is not a motherboard/chipset/firmware problem.
Is windows still installed / used ? If so, which version ?

Let's try amdgpu kernel module instead of radeon.
Read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … K)_support

Your card is Southern islands family, boot with

radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1

as kernel parameters *.

post fresh dmesg of that boot.

* If you use a display manager to start X, you may want to add

systemd.unit=multi-user.target

as additional kernel parameter to make sure you boot to console login.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

May I ask why the GPU is SI? I thought SI refers to HD 7000 series, and this GPU is "HD 8500M/R5 M230"
The last Windows versino I used on the laptop should be Windows 10 1703, Windows initially detected the GPU as R5 M230
then after I installed Radeon Settings and updated drivers , it was renamed to HD 8500M, both works in Windows.

I've setup AMDGPU, and by following Arch Wiki I did the following:
installed xf86-video-amdgpu
set amdgpu to load before radeon in mkinitcpio
set kernal cmmand parameters in grub and regenerated config.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

AMD videocard and related software naming tends to be confusing.

For kernel parameters it goes like this :
si_support refers to ALL gcn 1 cards, while cik_support refers to all gcn 2 cards.

With the amdgpu kernel module there's a bit more detail in the error messages.
The problem looks like it has to do with bios/uefi firmware settings  (especially iommu related) and MAY be solvable.

What is brand and model of the laptop ?
Are you running latest uefi/bios firmware ?

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

It’s a Lenovo G50-80, bought back in June 2015. I believe it’s the latest firmware update.

I might just reinstall it later

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

Re-installing archlinux won't solve the issue.

Some settings in your firmware block linux from using the amd card, windows probably works around that in software.
It may be possible to change the firmware settings to support linux, but I can't find a manual describing the uefi/bios setup for your laptop.
I have found a "user guide" and hardware maintenance guide , but no user manual .

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

It could be a bug in UEFI but not BIOS because I heard that many Radeon drivers do fail with UEFI, not sure if it’ll be the case

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

Since approx 2014 all firmware used on x86-64 boards have been uefi, bios doesn't exist anymore for new systems.

Unfortunately many uefi firmwares are buggy or only tested for majority use cases .

Laptop firmwares are notorious for not allowing many settings, but let's see how lenovo does it.
Yes, upload pics of the main pages of your firmware.

I have no idea why the image preview is rotated in this forum, the link shows a portrait image.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

Please only post thumbnails or links to images

FWIW the image is actually stored rotated "incorrectly" it just contains a rotation hint in the metadata which probably isn't simply honored by a default embedded img tag.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

The only settings about GPU is the Graphic Device . There is an option which enabled only iGPU and both GPUs.. Discrete is the later one

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

Was kinda hoping for more/other options, but they'll have to do.

What was Graphics Device set to when you took the dmesg ?
If you're not sure, just take new dmesg logs with each of the settings.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

It is always Discrete. I have never set it to integrated.
The only other option not shown in the screenshot in the firmware is secure boot. I have it disabled.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

On a side note I can't launch minecraft. Specifically, the iGPU "lacks OpenGL extensions"

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

That's weird and prompted me to re-check posted logs.

I now think this is what happens :

Your system uses Hybrid Graphics
Discrete makes laptop boot with amd card as primary video output
linux notices amd card is not starting and switches to intel card as primary

Please post your xorg logfile.

The entry with the * is the primary videocard.
Comparing this with lspci ouput the intel IGPU is indeed the primary one, while the amd card is secondary.

Please clarify which options you can choose for "Graphics Device"  in bios firmware.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Radeon R5 M230 failed when booting, then disabled

Thx, keep it on discrete.

Since the intel gpu is your primary gpu, let's try to delay loading amd stuff as long as possible.

Setup your mkinitcpio.conf to execute early kms start for the i915 kernel module and remove any references to amdgpu and radeon from mkinitcpio.conf .

temporarily add

module_blacklist=radeon,amdgpu

to the kernel parameters .

Move

radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1

out of grub configuration/kernel command line

Boot to console and login as root.

Use lsmod to verify whether amdgpu or radeon are loaded.
In case they are, try removing them with rmmod .

Then run

modprobe amdgpu si_support=1

post dmesg .
