Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

I think this is an abiword problem because I get flicker on several different Linux distros, plus FreeBSD. I haven't checked the project to see when the last time it was updated.

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

You have Intel CPU. What is the version of your kernel?

According to this bug report, kernel 5.2.8 and upwards seems to solve similar problems. HTH.

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

OP: does the whole screen flicker or just Abiword?

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

Then it's not the kernel or video drivers. It's abiword.

After work I can install and check my system to see if the behavior is the same.

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

So, installed abiword and yes, it flickers. Here is the package list I installed:

Packages (18) aiksaurus-1.2.1-6 gdome2-0.8.1-6 ghostscript-9.27-2 gmetadom-0.2.6-7 goffice-0.10.45-1 graphicsmagick-1.3.33-1
              gtkmathview-0.8.0-6 jbig2dec-0.16-1 lasem-0.4.4-1 libgsf-1.14.46-1 libots-0.5.0-5 libspectre-0.2.8-2 link-grammar-5.5.1-2
              loudmouth-1.5.3-2 pangox-compat-0.0.2+2+gedb9e09-3 psiconv-0.9.9-6 wv-1.2.9-4 abiword-3.0.2-9

Total Download Size: 25.74 MiB
Total Installed Size: 118.92 MiB

I looked at the project page and the project has not been updated since 2016. Not sure updates are necessary if no security issues or enhancements, but might be a bug. I did read some threads out there that suggest the fix may be theme related so if you are interested, Google "abiword flickers" and see what you come up with.

I personally have no fix as I don't use Abiword, sorry.

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

I have googled 'abiword flikerds' many times over many months seeking an answer.
I have a dual boot on this system with Arch and Mint (yuck) so my wife can use this box. Abiword does not flicker with Mint.

All of the fixes on the web recommend removing xf86-video-intel and removing some data from xorg.conf but as far as I can determine 13 does not use xorg.con

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

The video driver nor xorg has anything to do with the problem. The problem is with abiword itself, and possibly the theme interaction with the desktop environment or maybe the visual settings of abiword. I didn't see any of the google results showing a video driver fix because that is not related, only a change to the abiword visual settings (dark theme maybe?) or desktop environment theme changes.

Can you be a little more specific? This is what I have now:

[robert@lenovo ~]$ cat .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini

gtk-icon-theme-name=hicolor
gtk-font-name=Sans 10
gtk-cursor-theme-name=Adwaita
gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH
gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_LARGE_TOOLBAR
gtk-button-images=1
gtk-menu-images=1
gtk-enable-event-sounds=1
gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1
gtk-xft-antialias=1

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

Here are some threads that address this - they can speak better to it than I :

https://askubuntu.com/questions/808850/ … lubuntu-16

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/59169

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php?topic=5031.0

Give those a go - the Arch link has a link to a patch but it is not included that I can tell in the official repos because I just installed yesterday and it flickred like mad.

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

I'll reiterate: if the flickering was the whole screen, I would say yes, but it is not, correct? If only abiword is flickering, it is an issue with abiword only and not the kernel or video driver. The video driver would affect the entire screen and all windows. That thread finished with the statement that the fix would affect flickering of the screen, not just abiword, although the last poster did not state that.

It is my belief that this is solely an abiword issue.

Re: i3 window manager abiword flickers

Should be fixed in abiword's git repo.
