Help with installing linux-mainline

Hi, so I have some newer hardware that isn't supported yet so I was trying to install linux-mainline which does. I freshly installed arch, and then used the pacman linux-mainline to install the kernel. However, I came across 2 particular issues: 1) I kept getting device uuid not found for hardware, but I was able to get that fixed by completely wiping the drive and reinstalling linux which lead to issue #2, I started using grub to launch (because refind wasn't detecting) and it gets stuck at mounting /boot (i turned quiet off in the options). Any help is appreciated thanks.

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

Nothing in this post has anything to do with switching the kernel, and there was no need in either case to reinstall your entire OS or to switch boot loaders/managers.

Beyond that there's virtually nothing that can be said here as you've given almost no relevant information.

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

Ok, my apologies I will start from the beginning. I'm on my phone rn so I apologize for the terrible formatting. I freshly installed arch and got a working install going, but my hardware doesnt work with this kernel. So, I was trying to install linux-mainline but came across several issues. First, I came across this. https://prnt.sc/oyyakn which I fixed because refind was not updating the initrd causing it to. It load right. Then, it got stuck at [OK] Reached target Sound Card and I am unable to do anything and it stays there which I believe is a systemd issue but I cant get the logs because when. I live cd into it and use journalctl to get the logs, it just does the current boot and doesnt tell me anything. Also there is no quiet on the boot options.

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

You should also elaborate on "kernel doesn't support my hardware" what's your hardware? The only thing I've seen in that direction recently is some newer AMD GPU hardware, in which case you will have to do a lot more than just install linux-mainline.

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

I am using a AMD ryzen 7 3600x and a amd 5700xt. I know I'm go ik nf to have to do a lot more than update the kernel, but I haven't been able to get past updating the kernel because I cant get it to boot. I was going to go back later and follow the threat and install the other components.

Also, thanks for the journalctl link here is the log from the last boot.

The part I'm guessing where the error might be is with  Failed to load gpu_info firmware "amd/navi10_gpu_jnfo.bin" which causes it to fail loading the GPU. But I'm not sure

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

I know about the thread and was following it. I installed everything else from the mesa-git and llvm-git as well as reported by someone else they got working. My issue is I cant even get the thing to boot. This is my fourth try a d after repeatedly failing with booting I'm trying to just get the kernel upgraded before installing anything else. But I might as well do it again from scratch. I'll update if i can get it to work and missed it the first time around

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

Apparently certain firmware versions might be finicky, which of the ones mentioned in that thread did you try?

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

Aug 28 20:15:16 StandardModel kernel: amdgpu 0000:09:00.0: Direct firmware load for amdgpu/navi10_gpu_info.bin failed with error -2

Error code 2 is No such file or directory
What is the contents of /usr/lib/firmware/amdgpu/ ?  If the amdgpu module is added to the initrd are the firmwares as well?

I am using the ones in the AUR at the moment. Figured those would be working better.
Also for the error -2, there is no navi .bins but everything else is there.

Re: Help with installing linux-mainline

Got it to boot by downloading https://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/r … de/navi10/
And using mkinitcpio to reconfigure. I'll update if any more issues arise. But thanks to all for the help and teaching me how to use the system better and better diagnose problems

When I boot up it also changes to natural resolution of the monitor which I think is a good sign.
