[SOLVED] Unable to upgrade curl - conflicting files

Two days ago I attempted a `pacman -Syu` and received an error message about something being wrong with libcurl.so.4

I downloaded the newest packages from archlinux manually and installed them:

sudo tar -xvpf libcurl-compat-7.66.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz -C / --exclude .PKGINFO --exclude .INSTALL
sudo tar -xvpf libcurl-gnutls-7.66.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz -C / --exclude .PKGINFO --exclude .INSTALL
sudo tar -xvpf curl-7.66.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz -C / --exclude .PKGINFO --exclude .INSTALL

In hindsight, this was almost certainly a mistake since I'm now seeing that files associated with curl are reported as not being owned by any packages:

$ pacman -Qo /usr/bin/curl
error: No package owns /usr/bin/curl

I'm pretty sure I've screwed up the pacman database. Is there a way to get things back into working order? If so, where would I go to read up on this process?

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to upgrade curl - conflicting files

You did not install any package.
You extracted some packages' content into your root file system.
Where did you get that moronic idea from?
You can install the three packages with pacman -U and the overwrite flag.
Good luck!

PS: This is also most certainly an XY-problem, since you originally had that mysterious issue with the curl library.
If you want help regarding this, you should post the actual error you've got.
Screwing up your system even further by running comannds, that you obviously do not understand was certainly not a brilliant idea.

I see you have marked this [SOLVED], but if you would like help with your original issue, please give us more details.

As for your question "where would I go to read up on this process?" -- the wiki is always a good answer: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to upgrade curl - conflicting files

Sadly, I cannot provide more details since I attempted to fix the original state and ran into the state I described at the beginning of this thread. Based on my search history, the problem was addressed by the section of the wiki "Failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)".

Via schard's advice I was able to restore my system to a workable state by downloading the package files and using pacman with the -U and --overwrite flags to correct the package set up.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to upgrade curl - conflicting files

OK -- I'm glad you got it solved. While extracting packages with tar can be useful in one rare case, as you have seen it doesn't really install the packages, so that has to be dealt with separately (using --overwrite; a dangerous option), and there is usually a better way to deal with the problem. If you have a similar issue in the future, don't be afraid to ask for help or search the forum and wiki for similar issues before using tar or --overwrite again.
