Hi all, i'm a new arch-user, and i'm trying to set up my wireless card. I've used it with gentoo and ubuntu with success, so, like i did in that 2 distributions, i installed ndiswrapper and loaded the right drivers. The card is now seen by the system as wlan0, but i can't set anything using iwconfig.
For example, this is iwconfig output:
disabled@Dario:~$ iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:off/any

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0When i try to set essid (but also channel or mode) i don't get any error message, but iwconfig don't change them:
disabled@Dario:~$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid default
disabled@Dario:~$ iwconfig wlan0

Can it be a kernel problem?
Offline
Sounds like a module problem... what module are you using?
Offline
If with module you mean the wireless card module, i use ndiswrapper with the same windows driver on both arch and ubuntu. Arch version is 1.23.
Otherwise i didn't understand what do you mean ![]()
Offline
try to compare a
lsmodbetween ubuntu and arch...maybe there will be something different

I did as you suggested, but i didn't see nothing important missing, maybe because i'm not so proficient with kernel modules ![]()

Well, you said you used ndiswrapper before, but I don't see ndiswrapper in ubuntu's list.
Can you post the output of "lspci", and also check if "ndiswrapper -l" reports "hardware present" or not.

Oddly enough, it looks like ubuntu is using the "r818x" driver... which is some Realtek wireless driver. Try removing ndiswapper and loading that one (assuming it's part of the stock kernel).
Also note, some modules load wireless devices as "ethX" devices, which sucks... wireless != ethernet. Foolish module developers!
Offline
Well, i'm gonna leave for 2 days now, so i won't be able to try that r818x you mentioned, but i will as soon i return wednsday evening ![]()
I'm sure ndiswrapper loads my wireless device as wlan0 cause i've seen that in the dmesg after loading ndiswrapper modue ![]()
ndiswrapper version 1.23 loaded (preempt=yes,smp=yes)
ndiswrapper: driver netdlwl (D-Link,05/23/2003,5.140.0523.2003) loaded
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:06.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 20
ndiswrapper: using irq 20
wlan0: vendor: 'D-Link Air Wireless LAN Adapter '
wlan0: ethernet device 00:40:05:3e:7b:a0 using NDIS driver netdlwl, 1186:3300:1186:3301.5.conf

Well, i finally made it
After some troubles i was able to compile the rtl8180 driver (this bug is very important) and with that i was able to use my wireless card. Thank you all.
I still can't remember when i installed that driver on ubuntu, cause i was sure to have installed only ndiswrapper, but it doesn't matter
