Difficulty starting i3wm

I've been trying to figure out how to run i3wm on boot, and I was trying to follow the arch wiki but I don't really understand it and what I'm doing isn't working. Now though, when I reboot my laptop, in order to run i3wm I have to run

startx /usr/bin/i3

and when previously that would immediately load i3, now I have to repeatedly return

Ctrl+C

in order to get it to load or it'll just timeout and force me to reboot my laptop again. Anyone know why this is/how I can fix it?
This is my ~/.xinitrc file:

#!/bin/sh

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then

    xrdb -merge $sysresources

fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then

    xrdb -merge "$userresources"

fi

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi

# start some nice programs

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

exec i3

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

Please post command outputs and files in [ code ] [ /code ] tags.

Try enabling early KMS for your graphics chip. The timeout error is usually a race in getting the graphics device ready soon enough.

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

I tried it but it didn't work. I might mess around with it later and see if retyping it will change something

And I just fixed the code tags, thanks for pointing out how to do that. Also, I have an intel graphics card and followed the wiki steps but I'm still getting the same issue

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

Why/what is /tmp/serverauth.*?  Have you specifically configured xauthority for some reason?

What is the output of `echo $XAUTHORITY`?

No, I haven't configured xauthority and this is the output of the command:

/home/gavin/.Xauthority

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

Hmm, I guess that's not an Xauth issue.  I'm not sure what that error is then.

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

For clarification, this all happened after I tried to make my default shell zsh instead of bash. It caused a lot of other issues I was able to fix by switching the defaults, but xinit wasn't soing this before I did that switch so it could be somehow related to that.

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

What do you mean by "tried"? Did you or did you not? And what is "switching the defaults"?

If you autostarted X11 from your bashrc, that's suprisingly not gonna apply to zsh.
What does your zshrc look like? Did you make other random changes to /etc/profile* or similar files?

When I said tried, I meant tried the solution the first commentor offered (which didn't work). And when I said switching the defaults, I'm talking about my default shell, which was bash, I switched it to zsh, and then back to bash.

Also, I no longer have any zsh or zsh-related files on my laptop. And no, I haven't changed any random files.

Please paste your /etc/fstab and the output of `mount | grep /tmp`.

The other command just outputs a blank shell.

Re: Difficulty starting i3wm

If you create a new user.  login as the new user.

$ cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc
startx /usr/bin/i3

Does that work?

I did that with a new user and now I can't access i3 from my original user. Even after I deleted the old user and rebooted it won't work. I have to type on phone now, but here's the errors I got when running the startx command from my original user:

Fatal server error
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 1 (Permission Denied)
Please consult The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help
Please check the log file at "/home/gavin/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. (I also can't open this log file for some reason)
Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: unexpected signal 2

Actually, just rebooted again and now I can run through my original user. I still have the same issue with typing the Cs, but it's not a huge deal. I'd like to have it automatically boot into i3, but for the time being it's not terrible to type in those extra Cs

Did you completely log out as the original user? If not, that would explain the blocked TTY.

Yes, I rebooted before I did the startx command as the new user

The other command just outputs a blank shell.

So your /tmp is on the root FS?

stat /tmp
df -P /tmp
