Bootloader Problems on Windows VMWare

New pure arch install on VMWare, on Windows 10.

I used these steps:
https://chaseafterstart.github.io

on first reboot, getting "Kernel panic - not syncing VFS. Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)"

On booting back into arch installer iso and arch-chrooting into the new install, I noticed that /boot/refind_linux.conf is now empty. The config i had put there according to the above steps seems erased.

i checked several maybe-related threads here, but unsure if any of those fixes are correct for my scenario.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151766
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234950

i noticed the arch wiki mentions keys. Do i need to configure keys? I don't have any boot passwords enabled on my hardware.

Let me know any details you need.

thx

Re: Bootloader Problems on Windows VMWare

The official install guide you linked doesn't explain how to configure vmware. But doesn't vmware have to be configured correctly for arch to work?

Here's an official arch wiki article explaining how to install arch on vmware. It covers vmware-specific topics like vmware tools. So, i should ignore and disregard that article?

Indeed. Since the new base package was introduced that guide is now out of date and won't produce a correctly installed system.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Bootloader Problems on Windows VMWare

i went thru the official install steps
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_guide

but first i did have to follow the official vmware doc just to get vmware set up. Was i wrong to do that?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware

After install, grub isn't loading as expected-- i'm getting the grub shell. not getting any errors on boot, just grub shell.

Arch grub doc states:

If GRUB loads but drops into the rescue shell with no errors, it can be due to one of these two reasons:
- It may be because of a missing or misplaced grub.cfg. This will happen if GRUB UEFI was installed with --boot-directory and grub.cfg is missing,
- It also happens if the boot partition, which is hardcoded into the grubx64.efi file, has changed.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … scue_shell

Does this info help?

- as described in the official install doc, i have two partitions:
    - /dev/sda1 EFI boot, 260M, FAT32
    - /dev/sda2 Linux Root, 3.8G, ext4

i installed grub with the following. Got no errors:

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=GRUB
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Is this the problem? This returns nothing:

find -iname grubx64.efi

here's the contents of my /boot/grub/grub.cfg
