[SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

I am trying to set up the window manager sway -> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sway

Background: Typing sway in a TTY was working immediately after installing sway, but soon after (maybe after reboot i'm not sure) it just randomly stopped working and started giving me these errors.

sway -d output

The fixes that worked for most people were
  1. Add user to group video
  2. Early KMS -> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start

These did not work for me and after a lot researching I have decided that I need some else's help. I will gladly read any links to the wiki. Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

Please post full lspci -k , dmesg and/or journalctl -b .

Welcome to the forums.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

As a test could you please try

# systemctl edit --full systemd-logind.service

and remove all lines starting DeviceAllow
then reboot and retest if that has no effect you can restore the service file to its original with

# systemctl revert systemd-logind.service

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

Thank you both for responding!

Removing all lines starting with DeviceAllow worked. If possible can you explain what this is doing and/or link me to something that does?
Also I get the feeling that this is not a permanent solution but idk.

Certainly although the explanation is somewhat long.

           auto
in addition, allows access to all devices if no explicit
DeviceAllow= is present. This is the default.

As systemd-logind.service does not contain a DevicePolicy entry the default of auto is used and from the above removing the DeviceAllow entries allows access to all devices.

With systemd 243 [1] restricted device access [2] loaded the drm module needed by [1]
however that does not appear to be enough for sway to access /dev/dri/card0

upstream bug report is https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/13943 if you could work with upstream to fix the issue correctly that would be great.

Edit:
The output of `getfacl /dev/dri/card0` might help upstream if the request from https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issu … -551436318 does not work
for you which from your initial post I would not expect it to.

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

The problem arises in too late initialization of drm. Solution - correctly generate initramfs (certainly yours was inappropriate).

Systemd,  including systemd-logind.service  starts up much earlier than DRM.

[ 2.393054] systemd[1]: systemd 243.78-2-arch running in system mode.
[...]
[ 3.268024] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20190619 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

The second after systemd, DRM is loaded.

For me it looks quite different.

[1.169683] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20190619 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
[...]
[3.491801] Run /sbin/init as init process
[4.241608] systemd[1]: systemd 243.78-2-arch running in system mode

Of course, you can blame the whole evil of this world on systemd, report bugs and forget about them without breaking the subject.

I've already read about "Kernel panic - not syncing", now I see a change of subject - "systemd-logind Operation not permitted".

Where in the systemd commit log or release notes is such a change in requirements document?
Where in the bug report I referenced does upstream indicate that is required?

Who are you suggesting is doing that?  If this is intended why was the upstream bug report not closed as working as intended?

And why should the systemd permission system make delayed loading of subsystems and drivers impossible? In my opinion that is a bug in systemd.

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

Thanks for all the help!

Update: After doing a couple reboots and tests, the command did work with my service file restored.

echo drm > /etc/modules-load.d/test.conf

Since this was unexpected, if you would like any more information I will be happy to help.

Re: [SOLVED]Failed to take device '/dev/dri/card0':Operation not permitted

Please report this on the upstream bug report https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/13943
You should probably also note if the module was added to the initrd or not.
Edit:
Reported your findings to upstream.
