Hello Arch Community,
i have installed Arch linux on my Lenovo Thinkpad x1 extreme and now i have a big problem with my external display.
Display drive is the current nvidia driver (440.31). I am using the integrated 4k OLED display and an external Samsung U28E590D (4k).
The monitor is connected over the HDMI port. Samsung has two HDMI Ports: HDMI1 4k@30Hz and HDMI2 4k@60Hz.
If i create a xorg.conf over the nvidia-xsettings my integrated screen goes black and has a white line on the left corner.
After deleting the xorg.conf completely the integrated screen works again.
The external monitor works only without the configuration file at HDMI1 30Hz
On HDMI2 I have to plug it in and unplug it several times and change the gnome display settings to get it up and running.
After a reboot with temporary working HDMI2 the monitor does not go out of sleep mode but shows up on the gnome display settings.
A new generated Xorg.conf results also in a integrated blackscreen with white line on the left corner.
So summarily that's my problems:
- Nvidia or Xorg generating xorg.conf results in a blackscreen on the internal monitor with a white line on the left corner
- External samsung monitor works only with HDMI1 4k@30Hz (the bad one)
- samsung HDMI2 4k@60Hz works sometimes and then only until the reboot
I hope someone can help me to solve this problem. I'm still a little inexperienced in arch linux.

As you figured, that's not helpful and you should abandon this idea for all future purposes.

What does that mean?
The xrandr output has the internal and one HDMI output enabled (@60Hz and @30Hz, what would match a HDMI 1.4 output)
There doesn't seem to be another HDMI output (I assume it's rather DP on a HDMI plug?) and afaiu you, the HDMI 1.4 output doesn't cause you any trouble anyway? So let's rather see the one that doesn't work, but that you desire.

I meant I have the gnome top bar and activities on the samsung external display and after I pulled the HDMI port, the top bar does not switch to the integrated monitor. So the monitor setting does not change automatically.

The Thinkpad has only one hdmi port in which I plugged the cabel to the samsung monitor.
The samsung monitor itself has two hdmi ports (port1 4k@30Hz and port2 4k@60Hz)
the HDMI 1.4 output doesn't cause you any trouble anyway?
It works under the two ports only as described above.

That's most likely a gnome issue not responding to the randr event (please check "xrandr -q" on whether the output disappears after unplugging the cable)
In order to use the 4k@60Hz port your notbook must support at least HDMI 2.0 (I assume it does, but check the manual/spec to be sure) and you need a "HDMI Premium High Speed" or "HDMI Ultra High Speed" (that's embarrassingly the official version tag…) cable. Also please post the "xrandr -q" output when you plug the cable into port 2.

Ok, I have found another problem that could possibly represent a fundamental hardware problem while activating the connections.
I use a ethernet cable with this adapter for thinkpads (https://www.amazon.de/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E … B00LPRQ5UG)
After reboot the connection only works after a manual new plug-in. USB, AUX and power port are not affected by this problem.
maybe that depends?

Ok, finally i found the real problem but i have no solution.
it has something to do with standby sleep or these direction.
the monitor is basically recognized but it is not active.
My workaround to wake up the monitor is to start a new terminal (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F2) and then back to terminal 1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1.
Unfortunately, this does not solve the cause.
Hope someone knows now what the cause is. There can not be many possibilities anymore

That just means that gnome crashed, check coredumpctl.
After you unplugged the HDMI, xrandr still shows it w/ some VESA modes. Is there an adapter or (other) dock involved?
I'd suggest to cut out gnome and GDM for the moment. Start eg. openbox via startx/xinit, plug-in the HDMI monitor and run
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --left-of eDP-1-1and see whether that works reliably.
I don't think the ethernet issues are related.
