Xorg temporary freezes painting

I noticed that this happened from a while ago. I don't know exactly what update did this, but I'm sure this is a new problem.

I can describe it as the title says. For example, I'm writing now in Firefox. While I'm writing, the window stops showing what I'm writing, and some seconds later, it shows what I wrote.

I am using i3 now. I have set status bar to be hidden, and to be shown when holding meta key. When Firefox pauses, if I press meta, it will show updates to its window.

What makes me think it is an Xorg problem is that this problem is not specific to Firefox. Not all applications have this problem, but some of them have. I can't quite say what, but for example gnome-terminal does not have this problem.

And, I also have this problem in Plasma. I also have this problem with Opera.

Another thing is, when I record the screen using ffmpeg, I don't see this in recorded video! But it is happening, so I can't really show you, but it's there, and real.

The thing is I don't know where to start digging this. So any help would be appreciated.

I tried searching forum and google, but searching for freeze shows other results that I'm not interested in.

I'm by no means an expert, but I know my way around in Arch (old account is lost, I don't remember username/email big_smile ).

Re: Xorg temporary freezes painting

Some more relevant information would be your graphics stack: card(s), driver(s), Xorg.conf (if you have one), logs, etc.

So the driver is `i915`, but I don't get the radeon part. I'm almost sure this laptop does not have two graphic cards(intel/amd). Please don't tell me I was wrong this whole time! Pretty please ...

If I can get more information, please tell me. I have always bought laptops with Intel graphic cards so I won't run into driver problems smile Seems like I finally ran into one sad

Now that I'm writing this, the problem is gone, or hidden away. It will come back, as it has in the last days.

Re: Xorg temporary freezes painting

I have had the same problem since the start of 2020. At work I use two external monitors (through a dock) as well, but then I do not observe the problem.

When mirroring my screen via HDMI to a projector there are no problems visible on the projected image, but applications on my laptop screen are freezing sporadically. Most of the time I may mitigate this by constantly moving the mouse.

I've observed this issue in Firefox, QtCreator and Kate.
