No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

Hi there!

Got a problem that I can't solve myself. Today, I replaced my old Audigy 2 ZS (PCI) with a newer Audigy RX 7.1 (PCIe). I was hoping that wouldn't cause any problems, but I was wrong. Now I have no sound at all.

What I did so far: Deleted any configuration that has anything to do with sound in my home folder (alsa, pulseaudio, etc) to reset possible personal settings. That didn't do anything. Also, I've checked if the channels are muted via alsamixer, but I still had no luck. Everything I see seems to be fine (alsamixer, pavucontrol). If I play a soundfile, pavucontrol shows the output with it's small volumebar, so sound is obviously playing. But I still don't hear anything. Onboard-Sound is disabled via Bios.

I've also tested the sound output running a PartedMagic-Live-Session, sound is working without problems there, so it's not the hardware or the wrong output connector.

I'm a little confused right now.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

See if you can get sound from ALSA alone first. Disable pulseaudio and run speaker-test -c 2. What is the output?
Also what is the output of aplay -L | grep :CARD?

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, it has just become obsolete. I just came home after work and suddenly everything is working. I spent hours in the afternoon trying to track down the problem. Without success. Now suddenly, without any explanation, it works. I'm a little annoyed right now.  I would like to know why it didn't work this afternoon. Nevertheless: Thank you.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

It could be that the sound index of the card changed and the index could change on reboot. I assume you have 2 cards (your MB builtin and Audigy) and the default can be indexed differently on reboot. cat /proc/asound/modules gives you the order.
If you experience the same problem again, you can have a look at the indexing.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

Ok, NOT solved. The hole "sound-situation" seems to be unstable at all.

I just heard a podcast, then started Audacity to check an audio file for errors, and suddenly the sound is completely gone again. No matter what I set how and where, everything remains silent. By the way: I have only one sound card listed with 'cat /proc/asound/modules'. As I wrote above, the Intel-HDA is disabled and the modules are blacklisted.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

Post during this not working situation

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL
amixer -c0
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

FWIW if you open up audacity and don't have pulseaudio-alsa installed and don't set audacity to play back to the "default" device then that is quite normal. You cannot use an audio card while it's being blocked by something other than through what's creating the block (pulseaudio should, if installed, ideally be the only thing accessing the hardware)

Edit: Tried again after restoring Audacitys default settings (the "default" device is used). Same result.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

Mhm anything in dmesg and/or

journalctl --user-unit=pulseaudio

? FWIW there seem to be some known issues/regressions with this particular chipset, though I'm unsure towards the general progress, see for example https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=246758 maybe giving the LTS kernel a shot could help here.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

The journalctl-output looks fine. Nothing wrong here. I found out that I can reenable the sound within the gnome sound settings (switching to 'Analog Outoput / No Amplifier' and back to 'Analog Output / Amplifier'). Audacity is also starting normally for now, but I don't have a "stable feeling" here. I'll see how that works out over the next few days. In case of doubt I dare a complete new installation. I wanted to switch from Bios to UEFI anyway and a new SSD is coming the next days. So it would be a good opportunity.

Re: No Sound after replacing Audigy 2 ZS > Audigy RX

Ok, sorry, but I have to reopen this again. After a complete reinstall, the situation is not really better than before. On every second boot the soundcard disappears completly.

When this happens, the following message appears in the logs:

Jan 15 19:02:57 Aegis systemd[1]: Reached target Sound Card.
Jan 15 19:02:57 Aegis systemd-udevd[374]: controlC0: Process '/usr/bin/alsactl restore 0' failed with exit code 99.
Jan 15 19:02:57 Aegis kernel: snd_emu10k1 0000:07:00.0: AC'97 0 does not respond - RESET
Jan 15 19:02:57 Aegis kernel: snd_emu10k1 0000:07:00.0: AC'97 0 access is not valid [0x0], removing mixer.
Jan 15 19:02:57 Aegis kernel: snd_emu10k1: probe of 0000:07:00.0 failed with error -5

Google didn't really brought a solution. This is really frustrating by now.

I have an opposite situation but I believe this is related - no sound card detected on first boot with similar logs, after reboot the sound is working but headset microphone does not

The Audigy cards have an analog/digital output switch in the mixer. It's call "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack". Check if it's switched on. (not "MM")
If that doesn't work, see if disabling the alsa-restore.service changes anything (reboot required). I might be wrong, but AC97 looks a bit strange here...

Thanks for your reply, ahd
Although, the soundcard not being detected on first boot is still an issue for me I've figured out the source of problem with headset microphone - it's not related to alsa, but is a pulseaudio regression i believe.
related issue, resulting in all duplex profiles to disappear.
there is also a link to commit changes that caused the problem
I reverted these changes locally and got headset microphone working
