Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

This only started happening within the last few days, I update almost every day. Now, upon resume from suspend, the screen flickers every 200ms or so.

This is my dmesg:

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

Does this only affect the graphical session or also the console?
In case of the former: does restarting the display server (X11/wayland) help?

Can you reproduce it when passing

amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0 amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.audio=0

to the kernel?
If not, try to isolate the critical setting (The *pm values are more likely the cause, so try to remove the dc and audio parameters first and check whether the problem is still gone)

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

It affects X11 only, if I exit i3 and drop to tty1, then start it up again, the flickering stops.

If I set

amdgpu.dpm=0

then X11 will hang on startup, I had to actually hard shutdown every time I tried.

amdgpu.dc=0

stops tty1 from loading for some reason.

All the other settings appear to have no effect. At least I can get around the issue for now by killing X.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

Do you also run a compositor (picom/compton, xcompmgr, …)?
Otherwise: do you also have the problem when you purge xf86-video-amdgpu (and implicitly use the modesetting driver)?

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

Same problem here with KDE and AMD Radeon 5700.

If I change the resolution and then change back to original the problem disappears (until the next resume from suspend). Started after an update last monday or tuesday, I also keep it up-to-date, but haven't had time to try and find the culprit...

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

Ah, I also have the radeon 5700 XT. I use a compton but even if I kill it, the problem persists until I restart X.

Not sure what you mean by using the modesetting driver

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

Did you kill compton (should meanwhile be picom?) before suspending?

The modesetting driver is a generic kms driver for X11, it will be loaded if no other driver is available (or explicitly requested, in case you added some configlet that selects the amdgpu driver you have to move away that as well)

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

I'd guess it's not compton (since I use plasma) nor xf86-video-amdgpu (because it wasn't updated recently). I have no idea what is causing it though...

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

kwin (plasmas WM) has a built-in compositor (defaults to GL backend)…
SHIFT+Alt+F12 should toggle it.

Edit: also this could be a disparity between the kernel amdgpu module and the X11 driver, so a lack of update on one part is insignificant.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

I have the same problem running GNOME on Wayland. Downgrading kernel from 5.5.2 to 5.4.15 has solved the problem for me. I didn't downgrade any other packages.

Sure I just meant I don't use the same compositor as Cryptix_00 so it seems to me that the problem is elsewhere.

Could be that. I wonder if amdgpu-pro would make any difference? And why is it not recommended anyway? Wiki says it's slower, but they compared an old version.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

amdgpu-pro would only make a difference if the problem was the OpenGL context of either compositor (which is why the exact compositor doesn't matter)
modesetting would make a difference if it's the display server itself (or the GL context)

#10 is interesting because it's apparently not X11, but since the problem isn't indicated to be in the kernel, it could very be the GL context.

Other question: instead of restarting X11, does changing the resolution forth and back (eg. "xrandr --output <OUTPUT> --mode 1024x768; sleep 1; xrandr --output <OUTPUT> --auto") help?

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

I didn't try changing resolution but changing frequency from 60Hz to 30Hz and back helped me.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

I've had this issue, too. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=252681

For now I've disabled "suspend" to avoid this issue.

Pretty sure yours is a different issue, in my case nothing disappears or crashes, it's just flickering/strange bars running across the screen (kinda like an old tv with antenna problems maybe)...

In my case changing the refresh frequency did not do anything, but changing the resolution does make the problem go away until the next resume from suspend.

Same problem here. No flickering, but display won't resume after suspend. It started to happen yesterday after I upgraded my linux package. For now, only downgrading it to  linux-5.4.arch1-1 works.

Yea I think that is it. Guess it should be fixed eventually then?

For now I'm ok with changing resolution and reverting right after every suspend...

I can confirm that dropping to 60Hz then bumping back to 100 with xrandr seemed to fix the problem without having to restart X

I've had a problem like this before as soon as I switched to amdgpu, turning my monitor on first to the point it's waiting for input, then resuming was an acceptable workaround for me. If I try to wake without the screen already on an 'primed' my display won't wake up either.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

Sure, kernel bug 205915 did not have any progress. So stick with the LTS kernel or use amdgpu.dc=0 if it does not cause any other issues for you.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

I'm on kernel 5.6rc1 and just started experiencing this in the last few days as well. GPU is 5700xt. If I set my refresh rate to 100hz or lower, the issue doesn't appear. But the tricks of jumping down and then back up in either refresh rate or resolution doesn't work for me. I have to stay at 100hz or lower. Have not tried amdgpu.dc=0 yet.

Re: Screen flicker after resume from suspend [amdgpu]

I also had the same problem after updating to kernel 5.5.x. My GPU is an RX 5700XT, and I am using sway, so It's definitely not an X problem. I can confirm that after switching to the LTS kernel (5.4) the problem has now gone away.
