Anyone booting full systems via NBD with reliability advice

A challenge and side project that I've had is building a diskless system on hardware containing no physical drive. After network booting a live arch image, I've been booting NBD mounted VM images in qemu. As one might expect, the system runs fine initially, but the VM is prone to crashing or freezing as soon as there is any significant amount of writing to disk. Has anyone out there reliably booted full systems off the network and what did you use? What are the pros vs cons for NFS vs NBD? Anyone out there done this with NBD, NFS, or some other type of network share?
