[SOLVED] update broke boot

I have nothing more than a blinking cursor on normal boot, I use grub.

After some googling I change my grub arguments from 'quiet' to 'single' and this allows me into rescue mode but everything returns 'OK' on boot and I can log in and startx as root.

When I 'pkill x' and head back to the tty, then exit root I am back to the blinking cursor.

I simply want a prompt to log in as a normal user and 'startx' as I have for years, where to begin?

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] update broke boot

What did the update contain? (/var/log/pacman.log) From your description the system is booting but X which is started autostarted by something fails.  Please update your title to reflect this.
What is the contents of Xorg.n.log which is located in either ~/.local/share/xorg/ or /var/log / ?  How is X started on boot?

The system boots to the point just before I should be prompted to login, instead I get nothing but a blinking cursor I never autostart X and do not use login manager. The update contained hundreds of updates. The latest xorg logs mentions "dbus-core: error connecting to system bus".

Re: [SOLVED] update broke boot

Please fix your title: remove the pointless emoticon, and update it to reflect the fact that you can boot fine, it is your graphical environment that is broken:

Re: [SOLVED] update broke boot

It was not my graphical environment, It was a borked dhcpd update interrupting the boot process.

rescue mode > root login > pacman -Syu

Latest dhcpd was fixed. Thanks for the help.

Please mark as [SOLVED] by editing the title in your first post (and taking the opportunity to fix the title to point out the actual issue)
