Dell Core 2 Duo Laptop ?

Howdy howdy, I just bought a Dell latop that has a T5500 in it. Should I install Arch64 on this bad boy or just regular arch? Does anybody have experience with new Dell laptops and their other devices ( wireless, sound , video , bluetooth , etc... ) . Thanks !

Re: Dell Core 2 Duo Laptop ?

Dual Core has 32 bit. So it makes no sence to install Arch64. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core .

To check what hardware is supported give http://archie.dotsrc.org/ (Archlinux based LiveCD) a try.

The intel spec website says that all Intel Core 2 Duo chips support Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology. linky

Re: Dell Core 2 Duo Laptop ?

Before picking between running 32bit and 64bit, I'd advise you to read up on the current limitations of running a 64bit box.  One such example is that win32 codecs won't work without emulating a 32bit environment through whatever means.  Likewise for Flash, and I think (correct me if I'm wrong), Sun's Java 1.5 stuff.

Re: Dell Core 2 Duo Laptop ?

Extended memory technology isn't the same as a 64 bit system.

A today standard system, 32 bits have the limition that they can only access so much memory as there's bits in one word (32). This results in 2^32 = 4GB memory maxium.

Now, Intel has some fancy technology, to i.e. use two registers or whatever to map more addresses in RAM than 2^32 ... That's a technique independant of the bus system, alas, I'd recomend that you install a 32 bit system.

Re: Dell Core 2 Duo Laptop ?

Extended Memory 64-bit Technology (EM64T) is Intel's implementation of AMD64, a 64-bit extension to the IA-32 architecture.

I agree the name intel used is not very well chosen, but EM64T designates a 64 bit processor.

The T5500 in banana89 's laptop can run any 64 bit OS.

Whether 64 bit is a better choice than 32 bit is another question.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Dell Core 2 Duo Laptop ?

weird.... that is a misleading name. I think I'll just install regular Arch. I was reading that the 2.6 kernel has built in drivers for my wifi card. Now I just need to research into how to get the bluetooh & video out drivers working. Thanks for the info,  Arch has been my distro of choice for the past 3 years now and I love it !

Here is a partial correction. Sun's Java 1.5 works just fine in x86_64 Linux. However the browser plugin is x86 only. So it works just not in a web browser.

Now that you mention it, that does ring a bell..  Cheers for the correction smile
