Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

This is an error that has been happening for a long time with my current laptop, no matter which distro I'm using. Ubuntu, Manjaro, Arch, you name it.
I am normally using my computer when suddenly websites don't load anymore. This does not always happen at the same time and so I can't identify a pattern. Usually websites and everything stop loading but, for example, Telegram keeps running in the background.
I've tried a lot of stuff. Mainly

sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager

. Nothing happens. Today I typed

sudo systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

and I got the following:

UNIT FILE STATE VENDOR PRESET
org.cups.cupsd.path enabled disabled
getty@.service enabled enabled
lightdm.service enabled disabled
NetworkManager-dispatcher.service enabled disabled
NetworkManager-wait-online.service enabled disabled
NetworkManager.service enabled disabled
org.cups.cupsd.service enabled disabled
org.cups.cupsd.socket enabled disabled
remote-fs.target enabled enabled

The weird thing is, after running

sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager.service

the result from the above command is exactly the same.
I don't know what to do anymore. This bug is really anoying and stops me from working.

Edit:

sudo systemctl start NetworkManager.service

gave:

Job for NetworkManager.service failed because a timeout was exceeded.
See "systemctl status NetworkManager.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

All the following commands kept running forever with no output:

sudo rfkill list all
sudo systemctl start dhcpcd@eth0.service
sudo systemctl enable dhcpcd@eth0.service
sudo rfkill unblock all

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

That the list of these packages doesn't change if you just stop the service is expected and normal, you stop the service but didn't disable it so it is still enabled and will start on the next system reboot.

You should not try to use dhcpcd while using networkmanager, that will guaranteed run you into issues. Other than that there's little of relevance in the provided information so far, which chipset is this? Can you post a journal log from a boot with the issue? An entire

journalctl -b

would be good to get the full picture.

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

Understood the first paragraph, didn't realize that active and enable were different things.
So, do you want me to post the output of that command after I run into the issue again?

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

See if the following helps:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SurfaceLinux/c … fi_issues/

If the file does not exist (as was the case with me), create it and enter the setting under the [connection] tag (see here)

It worked for my SurfacePro 3 but it could well be the solution on any laptop.
Laptop power management and Linux still don't go along well with each other.

@V1del Here is a log after running into the issue: https://pastebin.com/bsTzfAp2

@pontifikas I tried your solution but nothing happened. I will report back if I run into the issue again. Thanks!

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

@pontifikas I have run into the issue 1 time since I tried your solution and it seems to work 50%. Let me try to explain:
Besides the issue talked about in this topic, there was a small one. Basically, my network would start getting slower, I would check my connection and the percentage would be 0 or less than it was supposed to be. This was simply solved by turning the wi-fi off and on again and everything would be back to normal.
Now, back to the main issue. Every time it happened, and I forgot to say it, and I tried to open the connection applet in my panel, the computer would simply freeze for 20/30 seconds (using Cinnamon, same exact thing happened with Manjaro). Then the applet would open, I would turn if off and on and it was like nothing happened. Same connection, same percentage as soon and I turned it on.
Today, I left my laptop on, I think, long enough to run into the issue again. When I came back, wi-fi was working but a bit slow so I tried to turn if off. Then the wi-fi applet freezed, nothing happened when I clicked it, sudo systemctl NetworkManager restart did literally nothing. So yeah, your solution helped a bit but it's still not 100% fixed.
EDIT: nevermind, wi-fi just stopped working after a few minutes.

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

@sldx12 that log is truncated and incomplete, redirect into a file if necessary to get the complete thing. One thing we see here, though there's no guarantee that it is related to the issue at hand is that a particular PCI device is spewing bus errors, depending on the full message and what exactly that is that could be harmless what's the device on the 0000:00:1c.5 bus? lspci -k

@V1del yes it is, I redirected it into a file but it just kept running and running and so I had to stop. It had an huge amount of lines and it would be impossible to post so I had to cut it. Here you have the lspci -k:

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

Assuming that error spew is harmless you might be able to get more useful logs by disabling the error reporting on the pci bus with the

pci=noaer

kernel paramter. This isn't going to help anything on it's lonesome but it should allow you to get more telling logs of other parts of the system.

FWIW you seem to have a rtl8723be wifi chip. And realtek chips have incredibly spotty wifi support, I don't think I've seen one that "just works". They all have drivers in theory, in practice they will have weird issues not unlike what you describe. Do you have a power saving daemon or so active? Do you notice betterment if you disable them?

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

@V1del I'll disable the error report and post new logs when I run into the issue again.
Sorry for the ignorance, but how can I disable a power saving daemon?

Re: Wi-fi randomly stops working after some time

You'd have to have one actively enabled, e.g. TLP or laptop-mode-tools or so and would need to stop and disable the relevant service. If you don't know you don't have one (... or aren't running Arch...)
