rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

My laptop got out of battery and when I tuned it on again the wifi wasn't working.
The wifi interface was DOWN and rfkill hard locked.
But that would be impossible to happen since to hard lock my wifi I needed my toggle using my FN key and that key isn't working at all (prob it's broken since I tried acpi_listen and even in winpe).
Also noticed when I plugged an usb wifi adapter on networkmanager (kde systemtray) it doesn't show my connections, but I can't connect using wpa_supplicant.
Some weird stuff also happens with my ethernet usb adapter that it doesn't show up even in "ip a" and once again nothing on networkmanager.
After passing hours trying to unplug my laptop, remove the battery, trying other kernels, checking firmware, blacklisting some modules, etc.
Found that if I remove ath9k module my wifi adapter, ethernet adapter and networkmanager issues are solved (ofc can't use wifi inboard since it's the one that use ath9k).
But I need the inboard wifi.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

The initial state might be down and either there's a firmware loading error (system journal, in doubt post the entire "sudo journalctl -b", not some grep) or there's sime hibernating windows (link in my signature…)

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

Well, you're online right now…
Redirect the output into a file, copy that onto a usb key or your phone and use the system that gets you online to upload it.

We'll need *some* information on the actual situation beyond "it doesn't work".

was on my phone which have the data lines broken so usb don't work
but managed to transfer the file the most retarded way I could imagine...split the file and convert to qrcode...it's stupid but worked
here it is: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/QBrf2DJb4h/

Try blacklisting the acer-wmi kernel module.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

First things first…
1. You've dhcpcd and NM enabled, that's a recipe for disaster. Pick one, disable the other.
2. Your RNG is late, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rng-tools and sublinks - if the HW support it you can pass random.trust_cpu=on to the kernel, https://wiki.debian.org/BoottimeEntropyStarvation
3. Which device is actually hard-blocked? wlps1s0 or virbr0? Because NM very much seems to toggle wlps1s0. Post the actual output of rfkill and try to disable libvirtd to take it out of the equation.
4. There's no trace of a wired NIC - none. Are such efforts supposed to be covered by the log?

Sidenote, please don't use ubuntus pastebin service. It's terrible and requires registration for the plain text and it's ubuntu.
(Wiki recommendation is ix.io)

took some time to happen again
I have no sure if RNG is still late, but disabled dhcpcd and libvirtd.

Sep 23 06:27:25 S7C-Arch kernel: random: crng done (trusting CPU's manufacturer)

RNG is in time smile

There's a wifi/wwan mismatch

Sep 23 06:27:28 S7C-Arch NetworkManager[505]: <info> [1600838848.1307] rfkill0: found Wi-Fi radio killswitch (at /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:01:00.0/ieee80211/phy0/rfkill0) (driver ath9k)

Sep 23 06:27:28 S7C-Arch NetworkManager[505]: <info> [1600838848.1698] manager: Networking is enabled by state file

that has been reported and the context there was a reboot on an rfkill'd radio (airplane mode) - does that pattern fit you?

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

Unfortunately I don't think so, I don't rly use airplane mode
This happens sometimes and it's persistent on reboot, but if I left the laptop during some time working or not and reboot some time later it normally works again. It's so weird.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

If you still have not resolved this issue, I would try resetting your bios to the factory default settings. This sometimes works in these kinds of situations. You may need to change a few bios settings after resetting it, such as disabling secure boot etc.

While, you're at it you might want to check if there are any bios updates available for your system.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

I tried that and a fresh install and still doing, it's the second time it does in 2 days in the row.
Unfortunately both at work and only at work.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

Unfortunately both at work and only at work.

You mean like it happens only while you're in a specific location (an office)?
Do you use a docking station there?
Did it previously happen in a different environment?

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

I could be wrong, but a few things you've stated kind of make me think this might be a hardware issue. We already know this is a pretty old laptop and that your function key is broken. Perhaps this happens mostly when you're outside because the computer is being moved around and jostled about. Maybe a switch, or a connection, or your WiFi card itself is on its last legs and failing intermittently.

If you have an Ubuntu account, hopefully you have an old Ubuntu boot disk kicking about. Why not boot the Ubuntu live environment and see if the same thing is happening there. If it is still happening on a completely different OS using a different kernel and firmware then that tends to support a hardware cause.

If it is not happening at all on another OS then that would seem to indicate there's something in your Arch install triggering this. At least that might help narrow down the cause a little bit.

Good luck.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

I tho about it too, but for example it happened today and I didn't move my laptop at all, just a reboot.
I don't have a second pc to test it out, plus this is a fresh install with only installed `linux-firmware`, `dhcpcd` and `iwd` right after install.

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

Flaky hardware does not require movement to act up. I simply thought it might be an aggravating factor if there was a bad connection or some other other user activated switch acting up.

It also wouldn't seem that difficult to test out a live boot environment from another distro as I suggested. It's been over a week since I made that suggestion, yet you have not even bothered to try that. If you have no access to another computer to download an ISO, then use Android USB phone tethering to get a working internet connection. If you dismiss suggestions without even testing them you may never track down the cause of your issue. Just because someone's suggestion does not seem that probable to you, is not reason enough to dismiss the suggestion (unless the suggestion is beyond reason).

Re: rfkill hard blocked (ath9k)

I didn't ignore ur sugestion, I have a working usb with last version of Arch, but I need to wait for the issue to happen again.
I don't have another PC or hd, and also I will not mess my OS mid development of work.
