[Answered]When are the old kernel & initrd deleted in a system update?

Here is what happened to me today: I performed a system update with

sudo pacman -Suvy

During the update the system crashed for an unrelated reason. When trying to reboot I found

/boot/vmlinuz-linux
/boot/initramfs-linux.img

missing.

I think this is very bad.

Is it possible that when the system crashed the old kernel and initrd files had been deleted but the new ones not created yet?
Is this normal?

Okay, thanks; I see from the link that this has been discussed before. I was just a bit surprised since I was not aware that was likely to happen.
