vgacon: remove software scrollback support

I have tried to comment at linux torvalds comment, and patch: vgacon: remove software scrollback support. I think my comment didn't get through. Trying to write it here.

  • Paid attention, and using it

I noticed.

probably because nobody actually _uses_ it any more

I am using vgacon. Partially because with GUI I get

$ make nconfig
scripts/kconfig/nconf Kconfigmake nconfig
scripts/kconfig/nconf Kconfig
Your terminal should have at least 20 lines and 75 columns
make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/Makefile:35: nconfig] Error 1
make: *** [Makefile:606: nconfig] Error 2

One reason is using large fonts. With vga I can have fonts large enough that doesn't trigger that error. And, not less important, I don't have to constantly scroll to the right, and back to the left.

  • sucker^Wmaintainer for it

I can't be the

Bad luck for me.

  • Does vga a fad?

Additionally, I think GUI badnwagon is not

just a fad

But so does vga. It is widely supported. It is good there are alternatives, or partial alternatives, that work out of the box. Both for old, and new, hardware.

Re: vgacon: remove software scrollback support

I'm gotten used to the console scrollback with Shift+PgUp and Shift+PgDown, and I find the removal annoying. I'm fine with launching screen, tmux or dvtm, but still... installing and launching programs just to be able to see what just scrolled by? it's just... sigh... see also the phoronix forum

How do you feel about this?

Re: vgacon: remove software scrollback support

I find it occasionally useful, but not important enough to maintain it.

If that turns out to be the case, we can resurrect this again, once we've found the sucker^Wmaintainer for it who actually uses it.

And there you have it. Functionality nobody wants to maintain will be removed.
