Gnome 3.38 Update issue (gnome-shell crash)

I updated to Gnome 3.38, and currently I am unable to enter into gnome-shell without a crash, using either GDM (which won't load at all) or LightDM (which loads, but is unable to launch Gnome.)

I had the same problem after updating to 3.38 today, downgrading to 3.36 solves the issue for now.

I have the same problem using the nouveau driver.

downgrading to 3.36.6 for both gnome-shell and mutter allows my system to work again.

Re: Gnome 3.38 Update issue (gnome-shell crash)

I had the same problem as you guys, gnome-shell 3.38 wouldn´t load correctly.
So I downgraded gnome-shell to 3.26.
I did however find a solution that worked for my. Not sure if this will work for anyone of you.

I have been using the "nocheese" version of the gnome-control-center, found in AUR.
When trying to update/build that one I got an error complaining about wrong version of gsettings-desktop-schemas. For some reason I had the following package installed

gsettings-desktop-schemas-ubuntu (3.34.0-1)

So I removed it with

yay -R gsettings-desktop-schemas-ubuntu --nodeps --nodeps

and then installed

gsettings-desktop-schemas (3.38.0-1)

Now I could build and install the nochees-gnome-control-center.

After a reboot, just for the heck of it, I just tried to update gnome-shell, not actually believing it would work.
But, lo and behold..it loaded and works perfectly fine !
As I said, not sure if this will work for anyone you, but it may be worth looking in to.

Arch...the way it was meant to be !!

Re: Gnome 3.38 Update issue (gnome-shell crash)

Thought I’d share that Gnome 3.38 also broke my gnome shell. Gnome would randomly crash after logging in. Gnome plugins also stopped working. I restored back to Gnome 3.36. Everything working perfectly again. Stay away until they get it sorted out.

rojo:  Are you using an Nvidia GPU?

My system has Intel graphics and works perfectly in Gnome Shell 3.8.
For those with Nvidia, are you running Gnome under Wayland or Xorg?

Yes I am using a Geforce 1080 Ti Nvidia GPU. I am running in Wayland. Just retried the update with the same issues. Gnome will crash on random login attempts. I can post the journal log if needed.

Edit: I just kept restarting my PC a couple times and now the issue is gone. Was able to enable my extensions again and everything seems to be running fine now.
