[SOLVED] No audio devices since last update

What the issue is

I performed an upgrade recently and after I rebooted audio streams weren't starting. Museeks and youtube failed to start the video and where locked on the first second of the video/song.

Opening up gnome shows me there are no output or input devices.

Attempted fixes

I first tried downgrading my kernel from

 Packages (2) linux-zen-5.9.2.zen1-1 linux-zen-headers-5.9.2.zen1-1

with

 sudo pacman -U linux-zen-5.8.10.zen1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst linux-zen-headers-5.8.10.zen1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Which did not solve the issue. So I tried downgrading a bunch of packages to hopefully find one that worked (obviously cd'ed into /var/cache/pacman/pkg:

sudo pacman -U linux-zen-5.8.10.zen1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst linux-zen-headers-5.8.10.zen1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst mutter-3.36.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst gnome-shell-1\:3.36.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-common-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-devel-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-xephyr-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-xnest-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-xvfb-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-xwayland-1.20.9-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-xmessage-1.0.5-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst gnome-desktop-1\:3.36.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst pulseaudio-13.99.2+13+g7f4d7fcf5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst pipewire-0.3.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst pipewire-docs-0.3.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst pipewire-pulse-0.3.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst pipewire-jack-0.3.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst libpulse-13.99.2+13+g7f4d7fcf5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst pulseaudio-bluetooth-13.99.2+13+g7f4d7fcf5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst alsa-card-profiles-13.99.2+13+g7f4d7fcf5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

But I get this

Re: [SOLVED] No audio devices since last update

Do you want to use pipewire? If not why are all pipewire audio packages installed, if yes why is the normal pulseaudio socket still enabled.

That said this still isn't conclusive on what is actually happening since none of these contain information about audio devices, what's your

aplay -lL
pacmd list-cards
dmesg | grep -E 'snd|sof'

Well that's probably problematic

I'm using pipewire because I'm using gnome shell. I don't remember switching to it though it does sound like something I would do.
At least I know I need pipewire installed because its a dependency of mutter which is a dependency of gnome-shell.

After installing alsa-utils

Though (as expected) installing alsa-utils did not fix my audio woes.

Also starting pulseaudio with

 pulseaudio --start

Gives me this (but doesn't fix the issue no devices are shown in gnome settings still)

Re: [SOLVED] No audio devices since last update

The pipewire dependency of mutter is for screensharing purposes, all the audio subsystems are optional and afaik not yet recommended for general use. Right now you have two things fighting for the devices, disable one or the other

systemctl --user --now mask pipewire.{socket, service} #Or pulseaudio...
