IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

Recently my laptop's internet stopped working after an update. When I tried using Discord or Firefox, the pages would load forever or time out. I tried pinging google.com, and it worked, albeit very slowly. Pinging 8.8.8.8 Wouldn't work, however. I was also able to use wget to download the google.com/robots.txt file. Further, I tried running Pacman -Syu and to my surprise it was able to run the full update at full speed.

After a bunch of attempts to reset the Network Manager and the such, I decided to reinstall my system (I backed up my user directory, so that's good at least). During the archiso install, I was able to connect to the network and use the internet with absolutely no problem for any reason, and was able to ping 8.8.8.8. Thinking that I've fixed the problem, I booted into my fresh install... and was met with the same frustrating problem.

This laptop is 2015 MacBook Pro using the Broadcom wireless chip. The Kernel driver for it has always worked with no problem, so I can't say for sure whether it's anything to do with that. Is there anything I could do to fix my laptop's internet?

===EDIT===
After some some troubleshooting it was discovered that I do indeed have an internet connection. However, for some reason it is only ipv6. Archiso connection to the internet via iwctl was able to connect to both ipv4 and ipv6. I have tried using iwctl before, and was able to connect to the network, however the router wouldn't see me and I didn't have an internet connection.

===EDIT 2===
Today I visited my family in a different town, and my internet began working like it always did. Something tells me that this is most likely an ISP/Router problem, and not of the software or the hardware. Thank you everyone for all of the great help you've provided me with!!!

===EDIT 3===
Whenever I am at my house, my laptop connects to the router only with the ipv6 address. The NetworkManager's nameservers contain multiple ipv6 addresses and one ipv4. When I am connected to a network at a different house and router, though, the nameserver contains only two ipv4 nameservers. The different network resolves an ipv4 address, and the router properly shows it. I wonder what might be the issue?

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

I have installed the broadcom-wl-dkms, but now I have no internet at all. I can't even detect or connect to networks now. ip link doesn't see wlan0 anymore either. Upon removal and reboot, wlan0 or its counterparts appear again and I am once more able to connect and use pacman, but unable to use the internet.

I should probably mention that when I go to my router utility, this computer shows up with an ipv6 rather than ipv4 in the connected ips section. Might this lend any clues?

That was my suspicion based on your first post and the reason you can ping "google.com" but not 8.8.8.8.  I'd bet you can successfully ping 2607:f8b0:4009:800::200e which is google's ipv6 address.

Please specify the protocol in ping for tests to confirm:

ping -4 google.com
ping -4 8.8.8.8
ping -6 google.com
ping -6 2607:f8b0:4009:800::200e

ping -4 google.com yields "Destination Host Unreachable"
ping -4 8.8.8.8 Same result
ping -6 google.com yields successful pings, albeit really slow. For example, there's around 5 seconds between every ping. The report says 8.3% packet loss.
ping -6 2607:f8b0:4009:800::200e yields successful pings AND at a normal speed as expected with a good internet connection. This is how all websites ping for me normally on this machine and the one I am talking to you from.

Perhaps pacman also connects to its databse via ipv6, and that's why I can make those updates despite not having internet...

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

You DO have an inernet connection, just no (or very limited / problematic) ipv4, and this seems specific to networkmanager as the same hardware on the same router works well when booted into the iso which does not use networkmanager.

Unfortunately I have absolutely no experience with networkmanager, but if you revise your thread title to specify the problem along the lines of "NetworkManager no IPv4" you might attract more attention from those equipped to further troubleshoot with N.M.

I suspect a complete output from `ip a` might also be useful for that purpose.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

Could be a routing issue, but a hostname resolution issue matches description better.

Post the content of your /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/dns.conf file , as well as the output of

$ ip -4 route
$ ip -6 route

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

ip r
cat /etc/resolv.conf
dig -6 google.com

What IP does "ping -6 google.com" resolve to?

Edit, one more thing: please check whether the archiso does use the wl module for your device (lspci -k)

When I run lspci -k | grep wl I get the output "Kernel modules: brcmfmac, wl", so it appears as though it uses both?
What confuses me is that when I install wl, the ip link device disappears.

EDIT:
Just tried installing the broadcom-wl package. After reboot, wlp3s0 disappears, but kernel modules has wl.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

I just ran lspci -vnn -d 14e4 on the archiso, and it has this:

Kernel driver in use brcmfmac
Kernel modules: brcmfmac, wl

So it seems as if the archiso does have wl, however, it uses brcmfmac, which my system already has?
Does this help at all?

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

I tried stopping Network Manager and installing iwctl. The results.... well, I can scan for networks but not connect to them.

EDIT:

Restarted system and installed wl again. This time I ran the command checking whether the module is loaded and it was not! I don't quite understand why it won't load, and I tried doing modprobe and all.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

You can ignore the wl situation, I just wanted to rule out that we're dealing w/ 2 problems (IPv6 and wonky NIC) at the same time.

I can scan for networks but not connect to them.

That's not an error message - what exactly happens?

Regarding NM, try to remove the IPv4 nameserver from resolv.conf and test the behavior.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

I just deleted the resolv.conf and restarted my system. Nothing happened, but right now I am on the good network at a different household. Once I get back to the old environment I will do it again.

And about iw, basically when I say station scan and get-networks, it lists the networks. When I prompt the program to connect to the desired network and input the password, it would spend several seconds connecting. After about 15 seconds it would say "operation failed" or something to that effect.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

DFOwl, NetworkManager can be problematic with ipv4. But it could also be a nameserver. Test other nameservers.

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

Ok so, while I was visiting another household, my laptop's internet magically began working like nothing ever was a problem. I thought that this might fix it. However, it did not; I just booted up my laptop at home, and it's internet stopped working here. I think this might be more of a router issue rather than anything wrong with NM.

However, you say try different nameservers. How am I to do that?

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

Ok I went into resolv.conf and it has multiple nameservers for ipv6, and only one for ipv4. Should I delete the line for ipv4?

Re: IPv4 Doesn't work on Home Network

Commenting it will do and yes-ish.
The IPv6 DNS resolves IPv4 as well, so that won't be a problem, but the proper way would be to configure that in network manager (since it'll likely rewrite the resolv.conf on every startup)

Also please try (assuming 192.168.1.1 is still the IPv4 nameserver)

I am unable to do this right now, as until Christmas I am in a different household. Once I get home, I will do this. However, I discovered that the resolv file greatly differs between by home network and the one that I am using as a guest here. Do you think this might be a problem with the router itself or with the computer?

That's "normal" - the resolver information is (unless explicitly specified) usually obtained via dhcp from the router.
