[SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

I am an owner of LENOVO Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 with  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 and integrated intel graphics card. Everything used to work perfectly untill recently I fully updated the system  and after reboot the lightdm stopped working - it shows only blackscreen with blinking cursor. I suspect it was caused by the nvidia driver update but I wasn't able to fix it.

The lightdm log looks like that:

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

Please wrap outputs in

[code]code tags[/code]

. When wast the last update before "recent" ? prime-offload which I presume comes from optimus-manager fails to load, if " before recent" is prior to the python 3.9 upgrade you need to rebuild optimus-manager at the very least.

There's also

[ 783.203] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting
[ 783.203] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

which would get us into the realms of https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start and/or simply https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … TTY_output

@seth  I've had my mkinitcpio.conf set properly before it looks like that

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=(battery i915)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
#    HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
##   No autodetection is done.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect keyboard modconf block encrypt filesystems fsck)

# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression
# is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.
#COMPRESSION="gzip"
#COMPRESSION="bzip2"
#COMPRESSION="lzma"
#COMPRESSION="xz"
#COMPRESSION="lzop"
#COMPRESSION="lz4"

# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS
# Additional options for the compressor
#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=()

I also tried the second link but it didn't help

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

The error changed, the "no such file" for dri/card* is gone, but your optimus config is broken:

[ 65.364] (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section.

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

the optimus-manager.conf

[optimus]

# This parameter defines the method used to power switch the Nvidia card. See the documentation
# for a complete description of what each value does. Possible values :
#
# - nouveau : load the nouveau module on the Nvidia card.
# - bbswitch : power off the card using the bbswitch module (requires the bbswitch dependency).
# - acpi_call : try various ACPI method calls to power the card on and off (requires the acpi_call dependency)
# - custom: use custom scripts at /etc/optimus-manager/nvidia-enable.sh and /etc/optimus-manager/nvidia-disable.sh
# - none : do not use an external module for power management. For some laptop models it's preferable to
# use this option in combination with pci_power_control (see below).
switching=none

# Enable PCI power management in Intel mode.
# This option is incompatible with acpi_call and bbswitch, so it will be ignored in those cases.
pci_power_control=no

# Remove the Nvidia card from the PCI bus.
# May prevent crashes caused by power switching.
# Ignored if switching=nouveau or switching=bbswitch.
pci_remove=no

# Reset the Nvidia card at the PCI level before reloading the nvidia module.
# Ensures the card is in a fresh state before reloading the nvidia module.
# May fix some switching issues. Possible values :
#
# - no : does not perform any reset
# - function_level : perform a light "function-level" reset
# - hot_reset : perform a "hot reset" of the PCI bridge. ATTENTION : this method messes with the hardware
# directly, please read the online documentation of optimus-manager before using it.
# Also, it will perform a PCI remove even if pci_remove=no.
#
pci_reset=no

# Automatically log out the current desktop session when switching GPUs.
# This feature is currently supported for the following DE/WM :
# KDE Plasma, GNOME, XFCE, LXDE, Deepin, i3, Openbox, AwesomeWM, bspwm
# If this option is disabled or you use a different desktop environment,
# GPU switching only becomes effective at the next graphical session login.
auto_logout=yes

# GPU mode to use at computer startup. Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid, auto
# "auto" is a special mode that auto-detects if the computer is running on battery
# and selects a proper GPU mode. See the other options below.
startup_mode=nvidia
# GPU mode to select when startup_mode=auto and the computer is running on battery.
# Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid
startup_auto_battery_mode=intel
# GPU mode to select when startup_mode=auto and the computer is running on external power.
# Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid
startup_auto_extpower_mode=nvidia

[intel]

# Driver to use for the Intel GPU. Possible values : modesetting, intel
# To use the intel driver, you need to install the package "xf86-video-intel".
driver=modesetting

# Acceleration method (corresponds to AccelMethod in the Xorg configuration).
# Only applies to the intel driver.
# Possible values : sna, xna, uxa
# Leave blank for the default (no option specified)
accel=

# Enable TearFree option in the Xorg configuration.
# Only applies to the intel driver.
# Possible values : yes, no
# Leave blank for the default (no option specified)
tearfree=

# DRI version. Possible values : 2, 3
DRI=3

# Whether or not to enable modesetting for the nouveau driver.
# Does not affect modesetting for the Intel GPU driver !
# This option only matters if you use nouveau as the switching backend.
modeset=yes

[nvidia]

# Whether or not to enable modesetting. Required for PRIME Synchronization (which prevents tearing).
modeset=yes

# Whether or not to enable the NVreg_UsePageAttributeTable option in the Nvidia driver.
# Recommended, can cause poor CPU performance otherwise.
PAT=yes

# DPI value. This will be set using the Xsetup script passed to your login manager.
# It will run the command
# xrandr --dpi <DPI>
# Leave blank for the default (the above command will not be run).
DPI=96

# If you're running an updated version of xorg-server (let's say to get PRIME Render offload enabled),
# the nvidia driver may not load because of an ABI version mismatch. Setting this flag to "yes"
# will allow the loading of the nvidia driver.
ignore_abi=yes

# Set to yes if you want to use optimus-manager with external Nvidia GPUs (experimental)
allow_external_gpus=no

# Comma-separated list of Nvidia-specific options to apply.
# Available options :
# - overclocking : enable CoolBits in the Xorg configuration, which unlocks clocking options
# in the Nvidia control panel. Note: does not work in hybrid mode.
# - triple_buffer : enable triple buffering.
options=overclocking

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

startup_mode=nvidia

There're no outputs connected to the nvidia chip...

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

Hey,
I also have this laptop, but I don't use hybrid setup at all, only nvidia, and my DM is SDDM. I have hybrid option disabled in bios, since I need it to work properly with external monitors.
I have these modules enabled on my mkinitcpio.conf, you can try the same -
battery nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm

I experienced the same issue when i915 was enabled sad

PS Initially I found this topic when I was having issues with the touchpad. I googled for "Synaptics TM3512-010" and came here. For the last year I luckily used xf86-input-libinput but recently it stopped working normally: the sensitivity became low on fast movments, also tap-to-click was unstable. I installed xf86-input-synaptics and got it fixed. I noticed that was listed as "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" earlier with "xinput list", but now it's "Synaptics TM3512-010", looks like something was updated. UPD No, it doesn't work sad Using touchpad is still very unpleasant..
UPD2. Got it! I forget there was a fix on Wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … )#Touchpad). The device was renamed and the fix stopped working. I'll update wiki page with the new name.
UPD3. This is driving me crazy. Sometimes the touchpad works fine, sometimes no. I saw somebody reported the same in debian mailing list couple of days ago after upgrading kernel from 5.9.15 to 5.10.4, probably I'll just downgrade

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

@seth I changed part of the optimus manager config to

# and selects a proper GPU mode. See the other options below.
startup_mode=intel
# GPU mode to select when startup_mode=auto and the computer is running on battery.
# Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid
startup_auto_battery_mode=intel
# GPU mode to select when startup_mode=auto and the computer is running on external power.
# Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid
startup_auto_extpower_mode=intel

and it didn't work

What's wrong with my X configuration that it doesn't see any output device.
The only file I have in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is autogenerated from the Optimus-Manager - 10-optimus-manager - and looks like this

Section "Files"
	ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia"
	ModulePath "/usr/lib32/nvidia"
	ModulePath "/usr/lib32/nvidia/xorg/modules"
	ModulePath "/usr/lib32/xorg/modules"
	ModulePath "/usr/lib64/nvidia/xorg/modules"

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "layout"
	Screen 0 "nvidia"
	Inactive "intel"
EndSection

What do you assume this does?

I know nothing about optimus-manager but assume that you'll have to explicitly re-create the xorg config file after altering the optimus-manager config?

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

@seth As far as I understand optimus manager it generates the xorg config file and saves it based on the optimus-manager.conf
I changed the config as you said:

# and selects a proper GPU mode. See the other options below.
startup_mode=intel
# GPU mode to select when startup_mode=auto and the computer is running on battery.
# Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid
startup_auto_battery_mode=intel
# GPU mode to select when startup_mode=auto and the computer is running on external power.
# Possible values: nvidia, intel, hybrid
startup_auto_extpower_mode=intel

And run

X -retro

this time I didn't receive black screen with blinking cursor but white screen (so it's a little improvement)
the xorg 10-optimus-manager looks like that

Section "Device"
	Identifier "intel"
	Driver "modesetting"
	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
	Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

and the xorg logs are

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

The last log doesn't indicate any problem.
"X -retro" should™ get you a gray (cross pattern) background and an "X" for a cursor - nothing else. That's normal.
Did you try to start lightdm w/ the updated X11 configuration?

Re: [SOLVED] LightDM - started showing blackscreen after update

Updated Xorg log?

[+0.99s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Connecting to XServer :0
[+1.05s] DEBUG: Launching process 2506: /sbin/prime-offload
[+0.00s] DEBUG: Loading configuration from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/20-optimus-manager.conf

Looks kinda like lightdm switches back to nvidia?
