Awesome WM black screen after logging in using GDM

I wanted to play around with awesome wm on my Arch install. Currently using Gnome as DE and GDM as login manager. After logging into awesome session the screen is black. Xorg is launched because I don't see a blinking cursor at the top but nothing else is visible. I can quit out of awesome via super+shift+q so I guess it's half loaded? I've heard some stuff about awesome and GDM needing root permissions but I don't know where to set that up. Other thing that might be causing the issue is the fact that I've setup NVIDIA Optimus to use NVIDIA card only. That's the only modification I've done to GDM. Don't really want to remove my whole gnome install just to play around and configure awesome. Any help?

Logs? Error codes? Investigate your Xorg logs, dmesg and Journal. You're also not describing *how* you're launching awesomewm.

Re: Awesome WM black screen after logging in using GDM

I'm launching it just through the GDM. Under the menu where i can change from Gnome to Gnome Classic. After installing awesome I have it available there. Where can I find those logs? Should I use ones in /usr or ~/.local?

What's your awesome config file?
Are you sure you're not just seeing X11 running nothing but the WM?

Re: Awesome WM black screen after logging in using GDM

i just encountered the same bug, and will try and explain the issue.

note: installing awesome on a base arch install with lightdm works as expected with optimus-manager.

installing awesome while gnome is installed, and using gdm to run the awesomewm leads to a black screen. Will edit with logs asap
