PulseAudio pavucontrol not detecting headphone mic after upgrade

I upgraded my system yesterday, rebooted and the sound completely stopped working showing only "Dummy output" in pavucontrol. After a quick forum search I found out that I had to install `sof-firmware`. And now, instead of "Analog Output" in pavucontrol I get "Cannon Lake PCH cAVS HDMI #" outputs and one "Cannon Lake PCH cAVS Speaker + Heaphones" where I can switch between internal speaker and headphones. Now the problem is with 2 items in Input Devices: "Headphones Stereo Microphone" is shown and it's not headphone mic but internal mic, and "Digital Microphone" that doesn't ever output anything.

How do I switch to headphone mic? I tried messing with `hdajackretask` but it didn't work as I didn't even know what I'm doing. Why's internal mic identified as headphone?

zeroconf is for networking support/raop it's not going to have an effect for local hardware issues.

the outputs of

arecord -l

during a recording attempt. FWIW sof-firmware and the associated alsa-ucm-conf configurations are quite young and potentially buggy so you might run into an actual issue with these here. We'll need to see these outputs to check what's detected how and where.

If this used to work and the fact that it tries to use sof and the digital mic here a misdetection you might also try something like a /etc/modprobe.d/dsp.conf

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1

to enforce a fallback to the old snd-hda-intel logic. But I'm not sure for how long this fallback is intended to be actively supported.

If you want to stick to it stick to it, this changeover just happened and there are still loads of snd-hda-intel cards that don't use sof-firmware I'm assuming that this relevant logic will be available for quite a while. FWIW every single one of the sof provided mics is muted in that output so that might well be the issue and you could try disabling the option again and then explicitly unmuting the mics.
