PPP: does wvdial 1.56 work???

Hi, i'm a completely NEWBIE to archlinux. After i've succesfully installed the base system, today i wanted to configure my internet connection over my great old us robotics 56k voice faxmodem... So i downloaded (from another workstation!) and installed wvdial & dependencies... but every time i launch wvdialconf it doesn't write ANY configuration file for wvdial. I use this command

# wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

should be ok, or not? When wvdial.conf doesn't exist, wvdialconf answers that it "cannot open /etc/wvdial.conf for reading", when it does exist (blank for example), wvdialconf tells me that it has "overwritten the configuration succesfully" or something like that, but anything has changed actually... maybe the 1.56 arch package is broken? I'll try to compile/install wvdial manually, maybe some old version...
