[SOLVED] Only single core/thread working

I've noticed that my box is working with only one thread. I have Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1231 v3 @ 3.40GHz which have 4 core 8. I have no idea for how long is that way. I've tried reseting bios/checking seeting and booting other distro. With other distro i have 8 threads working without any problems.

cat /proc/cpuinfo show only one core.

Re: [SOLVED] Only single core/thread working

I've eliminated all posibilities from wrong settings in bios or hardware malfunction (bios reset, minimal install on another hard drive). I've narrowed problem to "something wrong in my OS".

Re: [SOLVED] Only single core/thread working

If you can rule out a hardware issue, this might well be a Kernel bug.
Here's how the activation of the CPUs looks on my laptop:

[    0.229461] smpboot: Max logical packages: 2

Have you tried the LTS or ZEN kernel? Do they have the same issue?

PS: I just found this: https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/36176 … all-cores/
PPS: Also try to boot with intel-ucode.

Re: [SOLVED] Only single core/thread working

The thread linked by schard suggests this could be firmware related.

kwi 30 23:32:31 datavault kernel: efi: EFI v2.31 by American Megatrends

kwi 30 23:32:31 datavault kernel: smpboot: Allowing 9 CPUs, 8 hotplug CPUs

kwi 30 23:32:31 datavault kernel: smp: Bringing up secondary CPUs ...

kwi 30 23:32:31 datavault kernel: smpboot: Total of 1 processors activated (6787.33 BogoMIPS)

EFI 2.31 is from 2011 , and early efi implementations often work much better if they're booted in CSM / bios mode .

What is the output of (run as root)

# ls /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

What is brand/model of your motherboard ?

Which bootloader are you using ?
please post lsblk -f output .

If you boot with archlinux install iso, does that also see / use only 1 core ?

Re: [SOLVED] Only single core/thread working

motherboard is supermicro x10sll+-F. UEFI implementation is very buggy - with system installed in uefi mode i can't enter bios without braking loader or removing harddrive with system from server in first place. Learned that the hard way - after 2 years.

I'm using systemd-bootd boot loader.

When I'm booting archinstall iso everything works fine. I've also tried installing on another drive and still worked fine - same kernel with zfs package from archzfs with bootd as boot loader.

I've tried xpenology topic and similiar others with no effect.

That suggest it's not efi / bios related as systemd-bootd only boots efi mode.
Could you post dmesg and/or journal from boot with installation iso ?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_o … in_clients lists several methods that can be used to upload stuff from cli .

Something goes wrong very early in boot process when booting the installed version .

If I remember correctly the install iso has an option to chroot an existing installation , try that .

Re: [SOLVED] Only single core/thread working

Yes. Install iso have arch-chroot and chroot tools to do that.

Anyway. I've tried to dmidecode and got:

dmidecode
# dmidecode 3.3
/sys/firmware/efi/systab: SMBIOS entry point missing

File exist but is missing smiinfo

cat /sys/firmware/efi/systab
ACPI20=0xdd8aa000
ACPI=0xdd8aa000

I will try bios downgrade and let you know.

//edit
BIOS downgrade didn't help but when I've set boot path  to /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI it started booting properly and using all 8 threads.

Thanks everyone for help.

Main symptons:
* kernel: DMI not present or invalid.
* only one thread working
* network cards suddenly changing names and network ids: eno0 -> enp3s0
