Greetings everyone and I am sorry for bothering you, but I need your help.
A couple of days ago there was an update for the yay package installed from AUR. I have decided to fully upgrade my system via
# pacman -Syyu && pamac update
but it gave me some sort of an error building the yay package:
build cache is required, but could not be located: GOCACHE is not defined and neither $XDG_CACHE_HOME nor $HOME are defined
I have read a couple of similar topics (f. e., here and here), but still the error remains, and I feel kinda dumb after all that...
Appreciate your help very much! Thank you and I apologize for possible mistakes in the text above.

You are not supposed to run AUR/makepkg operations as root and if that # is any indication you are currently attempting to do that.
why are you not just updating yay with yay?
Otherwise, learn how to actually use the AUR instead of relying on a hodgepodge of helpers by reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Makepkg and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_User_Repository

does it work if you build with just makepkg?

Thank you for the answer! I missed that up, and now I see where I was dumb. :-) Marking the topic as "solved" now. Appreciate that and I apologize for not doing the complete research.

It does. I was kinda stupid running pamac with sudo for some reason. Maybe, I was too tired to understand that. :-) Thank you very much for the quick answer!
