Getting Microphone to work in Skype

Hi,

I can hear Skype but not get mic to work ... levels are set in alsamixer

tried wiki guide for skype but nothing yet...

So I thought I would load up audacity to test mic ... but I get Error while opening sound device

Could be a problem with dsp ... only I have read about Skype hijack whatever that is...

No sure where to look?

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

I can't remember which command line options you need, but play with arecord to make sure the mic is working first. Its part of alsa-utils, IIRC. You have a new system, I'm guessing it has onboard sound, and its possible that the microphone isn't supported yet.

When I had trouble, I had to go into alsamixer, press F4 or F5 to get the "input" levels, and had to find some switches for input select and mic select and some other crap... make sure that "capture" is set to microphone. Play with the switches.

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:803:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream
arecord: main:550: audio open error: Invalid argument

emmm not sure whats that all about is it dmix (the devil himself!)

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

Trying out skype-beta & skype_dsp_hikacker in aur see if they work....

I can hear calls ok ... but mic is still not working ...

Is there an alternative to skype app I could use?

Wait a minute would having modules (alsa!) in modprobe.conf affect it?

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

If you can't get arecord to work, you won't get any other mic-dependent program working, beta or not. They all have to access Alsa in basically the same way. Search google for your particular sound card, I recall some dmix thing you may asound.conf stuff you may have to add.

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

thanks Dusty ;-)

I have set up .asoundrc as per wiki but I also have asound.conf in /etc

now wondering if they clash .....?

Anyway I am going to change headset as I think mic is not working at all... I want one of those fancy plug in phones ...lol

At least then I'll know which is at fault

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

Ok I have this problem also except I have a SB Audigy 4 pro.

I can use skype and play music while skype is going and the other person on the other end can hear whatever i play!! aplay / mpg123 etc...

Even though I can hear myself through the mic, the mic will not record in arecord. So this has baffled me. It will neither work in skype, and when I record using arecord at 8bit 8000hz...

I've checked vol settings as well, and put them all up, which just makes my talking louder through the speakers. I am baffled as to why this is happening. sad

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

This may help. I got my mic to work by enabling V_REFOUT Enable
in Kmix. I also unmuted the mouse. It now works with skype. I have onboard sound on an intel motherboard.

Re: Getting Microphone to work in Skype

I am glad I am not the only person having microphone issues. Mine use to work perfectly, but nothing now.
Mic vol= 100%
Mic Boost = Enabled
V_REFOUT = Enabled
Line = 100%
Line in sens = Enabled

I can hear myself if I talk into my mic through my own speakers, but with any application all I get is static.
