Re: How do you manage your passwords ?

Way back i used short made-up words, which were bad passwords.

Later i used made-up sentences of a made-up vocabulary that i had in my head, which was still far from ideal.

Then i had a short circuit somewhere in my brain and switched to high entropy random strings, which at first i memorized, until moving on to password managers, which was good. Then i forgot the password to my password manager and upon recovering it i realized that it deleted all of my fucking passwords as a standard procedure after recovery (firefox lockwise), which was really really bad.

Then came the realization that i don't have many high-stake web accounts. So a security compromise wouldn't, to my potentially questionable reasoning, be as bad as having to deal with a bunch of secure passwords.

So i've recently come full circle and use short, made-up words again for most of my online presence, the same ones i used as a kid and have since spotted in numerous password dumps. Simply to fill in the password requirement basically all online services with logins have. Because save for a few exceptions like email where i still use secure passwords, most of my logins are replaceable, with the only potential drawback for me being the mild inconvenience of having to find a temp-mail service (to verify the account) that hasn't been blocked yet.

So if i ever start posting spam, you'll know why.

Haha, I did the same reasoning, and as a consequence have been rather pragmatic about my passwords.

I found another reason to tighten up my ship, though. If I die, my wife will be locked out of anything related to me, except insurances and bank accounts, which I believe are pretty automatic.

So, I use KeePassXC and have written down the master password on a piece of paper for her. She has access to the password database file, and I update it manually from time to time.

It contains anything I'm able to put in there, and although she can't be bothered to use KeePassXC or anything like that, at least she knows how to access it smile

It gives peace of mind.

And it provides me with killer passwords. They are long and ugly and I can enter them in less than a second big_smile

Re: How do you manage your passwords ?

I used Firefox Sync a lot, but since this forces me too also use firefox on my mobile device I switched over to KeePassXC.
I sync the Database file between my devices via Syncthing over my Wireguard network.

I don't sync the key (I set my db up so that it requires key + pass).

Sorting all my account credentials in a searchable database and also adding all the corresponding URLs and sometimes additional information + files has been a great improvement of my life.

There is a slight possibility of a version conflict between database files, but keepassxc is developing a method where a separate sync file contains only the changes, so once this gets more usability maybe I use that.
Also the KeePassXC browser addons for chrome and firefox based browsers, work really well.

KeepassXC and Syncthing. Local/shared vault vs. cloud based is a matter of risk management, and in my view the risks from cloud based are greater for my uses and needs.

Bitwarden_rs, self-hosted and only accessible via VPN when I'm out of the house. It's so easy I was even able to get my wife to convert from her password-filled word doc!

Vanilla Keepass with plugins for chromium and firefox. And TOTP plugin for websites that support 2fa using it.
Unique password for each website, account.
Keepass DX on mobile.

Happy with that.

Re: How do you manage your passwords ?

I just remember about 5-7 passwords.

I use one for finance accounts, one for gaming accounts, one for work accounts, one for accounts on websites with more questionable security, so on and so forth.

Re: How do you manage your passwords ?

I use app.keeweb.info (open-source online keepass client) with the key on a sd card / usb, and password file synchronized on my webdav. I really like the interface, I also use it as a bookmark tool, and with all the keyboard shortcuts it's as fast (maybe even faster) as when I was using pass + dmenu.

Nearly all of them, as it should be. I am not registering in services for no reason and I also abandon accounts I no longer need, so not many: 30–40.

Re: How do you manage your passwords ?

I've got 71 so far. Also, I want to take a day to change a bunch of passwords, as I've accidentally entered passwords on the user field in the past and I fear that if the logs ever get hacked, one could guess those weird unique usernames might be someone's password.
