New ISOs for i686

There are tons of known problems with the i686 0.7.2 installer. Most of them are related to hardware trouble, because the installer didn't have any real hardware detection.

tpowa has recently put some work into archboot and mkbootcd and created new isos. These use udev for autodetection, contain more tools than the original install cd, can also be used as a rescue disc for your system and have more up-to-date packages.
They also reflect some changes in the install script and afaik already use mkinitcpio by default instead of mkinitrd.

I've been recommending these to almost everyone on IRC for quite a while and they solve most of the problems of the 0.7.2 (and older) installer. As far as I know, the official x86_64 0.7.2 installer already uses the archboot-based CDs.

These isos have not yet been officially announced, but I still recommend to everyone using them instead of the official 0.7.2 CD, you will run into much less trouble. Download them at http://www.archlinux.org/~tpowa/newisos/

Re: New ISOs for i686

IMHO these ISOs should be released as 0.7.3.
AFAIK X.X.x versioning was made exactly for this situation.

Of course, initscripts and filesystem packages should be modified.

Well, I think they're waiting for kernel 2.6.18 to be in current with initcpio (and no more initrd/initramfs). It's a big change too.

Re: New ISOs for i686

I've tried the ftp iso for installing arch in a vm , and it does seem to be faster and working better.

I also like that the default GRUB menu.lst has both the normal and fallback mkinitcpio already in place.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

A question..

Except for the partitioning and the creation of the filesystems... can the rest of an ArchLinux installation be made with pacman alone?
Or there is some other special setup that the installer does?

You are right, the installer does not do much. It creates filesystems and uses pacman to install a base system.

It helps you further with these: It asks you to edit some important configuration files, installs a kernel, creates a sane grub configuration file and installs grub. I think that is all.

Re: New ISOs for i686

Unfortunately, I even havn't manage to boot from current-0.7.2-20060927-i686.iso nor from ftp-0.7.2-20060927-i686.iso. It hangs while Isolinux loading. I tried different media - they all are OK but not boots.
I use Dell Latitude D400 laptop with external USB DVD-RW drive.

Official 0.7.2 ISO boots well but installer could not determine my DVD-Rom while chosing the installation source. Thus I had to try this new ISOs.

What can I do to resolve the problem?

Re: New ISOs for i686

It sounds like tier might be having the same problem with the new 0.7.2 iso's as I just had.  I tried the base and ftp installs - and all threw the same error on boot:

isolinux: disk error 20, AX=42F3, drive EF.  Boot failed.  Press a key to retry.

I do not have an external drive -  this is on a pretty standard desktop machine.  I ended up just doing an ftp install with an old 0.7.1 disk I had laying around.  I found this post from 2004 regarding the 0.6 install with the same problem: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=6400  It was resolved by a bios downgrade.

if it doesn't start loading anything it sounds to me more like a isolinux/bios bug

Re: New ISOs for i686

do yousee the boot screen or does even this fail?
if also this fails i would blame it on bios in combination with isolinux or media is crap

I'd love to see more up2date isos too. Althogh my arch will stay a while of course, but new users should get a good feeling also with the install.
