Does ProtonVPN require a running NetworkManager service?

Hi,

I Installed the official ProtonVPN Apps (GUI and CLI) via the AUR.
Tried to setup and use VPN according ProtonVPN's linux docs.
Unfortunately, neither the GUI App nor the CLI do actually work. They fail immediately, right after providing  credentials.
These are the errors:
GUI App: "Unknown error occured. If the issue persists, please contact support.",
CLI: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files"

Does anyone know if ProtonVPN and Mail require a running newtworkmanager service?

That would be a huge drawback, as this cannot be taken for granted on Linux (I personally use systemd-networkd as a network manager); also, this is nowhere mentioned in the ProtonVPN docs as a prerequisite.

Basically all "easy" distributions (and the enterprise desktops) use networkmanager. They might have forgotten to mention that in the arch specific dependencies.

You could use the provided openvpn or ikev2/strongswan configuration files, though.

There is also an unofficial cli tool that does not need networkmanager: https://github.com/Rafficer/linux-cli-community (edit: in the AUR as protonvpn-cli-ng and protonvpn-applet)
