[SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

Hi, I have strange freezes with a successful NVIDIA Driver installed and I don't know why.
Here is the log before it crashed

https://pastebin.com/3R0KZUFk

My Specs:
Kernel: 5.13.13
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (driver: 470.63.01)
CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz × 6

I tested every component on Windows 10 with the Lenovo Anayze Tool, No Errors

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

It works after installing the Runner,
but the problem came back.

Does someone know what this does?
When it is very early: InGame for example, I play Psychonauts right now, I know I have to use the Installer.

I just don't know why
Can somebody help?

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dynami … le_Support

You're installign an older driver (410.93) for the current kernel.

Edit: the better™ approach would be to install the dkms driver from the ALA,https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive

It was only an example. I can't do a screenshot without the X-Server running.
I always use the runner from the NVIDIA Homepage: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.63.01.run
They didn't change much, the DKMS Module Building Loading Screen still looks the same.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

I already made a thread about it: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=268915

And apparently the supposed fix didn't work - because at best it ends up being idempotent.

The nvidia driver is properly loaded in the original journal and there're no indications for errors from that side, but in case that wasn't clear: there're IO errors on one drive.
Best case scenario is a hibernating windows, worst case is that your disk is falling apart.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

You mean the device /dev/sde?
This is a strange bootable device from the QHD Screen, MSI included it.
in Windows 10 you can even read it and the only thing whats in it is a Homepage Link and a Text File.

Sadly I can't stop Linux from trying to boot it as a normal device.

Did you ensure that windows fast-start is disabled? (Don't think, look - windows updates silently re-enable it on occasion)

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

Again: the nvidia driver did load fine in your original journal and given that you had this issue before and falsely assumed a resolution I HIGHLY doubt that installing nvidia-dkms did anything here.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

This has nothing to do with your BIOS.

Windows by default does no longer shut down the system when you shutdown. Instead it hibernates so it can start fast (ie. wake up from hibernation)
That's a no-go when you want to run multiple OS because essentially, windows is still running at this point and the HW in an undefined state and all sorts of weird stuff can happen. Read the link in my signature.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

You were right! I disabled secure boot and hibernation in Windows 10
But nothing changed on the GPU Freeze Front.
I hadn't success with mkinitcpio -p linux -> and including DKMS either.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

That's voodoo - the dkms uses the same packagebuild and the same upstream driver release as the version prebuilt for the kernel.
You need dkms is you want to use other than the vanilla or the lts kernel (custom kernels, zen, ck, hardened…)

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

I found the last entry before the computer crashed:

Sep 08 16:24:00 seb kernel: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 79, pid=497, GPU has fallen off the bus.
Sep 08 16:24:00 seb kernel: NVRM: GPU 0000:01:00.0: GPU has fallen off the bus.
Sep 08 16:24:00 seb kernel: NVRM: GPU 0000:01:00.0: GPU serial number is .

It froze while playing Psychonauts again.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

Please don't copy out of the pager, redirect the output into a file or pastebin service (1st link below)

There's also

Sep 08 16:23:35 seb kernel: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 32, pid=2797, Channel ID 00000020 intr0 00040000
Sep 08 16:23:35 seb kernel: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 32, pid=2797, Channel ID 00000020 intr0 00040000

XID isn't a client error, so the issue is HW (underpowered, overheated, badly seated) or a bug in the driver (which is not overly likely)

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

This is real strange, I used the NVIDIA Installer before starting the X-Server And the PC didn't freeze playing Psychonauts
I am really confused right now.

Here is the Log from the Nvidia Installer
https://pastebin.com/6Y58PTvB
https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/i … irst/27131

I started the X-Server with

startx -- -logverbose 6

It doesn't freeze anymore.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

The only explanation I can see is that the compiler on the repo build (the kernel module gets built - the "GPL condom") takes a different CPU optimization (probably SSE version, but that's a random guess) than on your system and that causes this.
It's very strange still, but you're getting the sam behavior w/ the dkms and nvidia-installer build - that differs from the repo binary, right?

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

Yes but it works now with the new startx command from the NVIDIA Helpthrough.
No matter how I install the NVIDIA Driver.

I was certain that it will crash, so I can find the solution but it doesn't with -logverbose 6 command, at least it works.
I am fine with logging things as long as it doesn't damage the GPU, I mean it doesn't hurt my computer like the freezes did.

I made the autostart script in the .profiles file. So I don't have to type it in anymore, and I have to live without gdm
but I wasn't a fan anyhow.

Thank you for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

If you look at your log, you have dozens of errors related to disk access /dev/sde

Maybe eliminate that before you conclude its the GPU

Maybe you should read the whole thread /dev/sde is included with the MSI Screen, it is not one of my devices.

Did the weather conditions change?
(Again: the GPU falling off the bus can have all sorts of causes and in isolation, esp. at random and during use, the most likely one is a HW issue - eg. if the GPU is badly seated or you forgot/fumbled the 6/8-pin power supply or the PSU is too weak or the system gets too hot…)

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

No it was a prebuilt PC I never touched The Nvidia Card, The Motherboard or the CPU the only thing i did is add a less noisy but bigger Fan.
But sensors is at 40 Degrees Standard and 60 Degrees while playing Games.
And it also doesn't change the fan speed, the only thing what's happening is that the PC freezes the screen and the music ist still running.

Here is the Product Page

Re: [SOLVED] Freezes with MAG322CQRV & NVIDIA RTX 2070

You're looking for a way to reliably switch on/off the problem to isolate the cause.

The MSI thing is some game controller?
Have you ever reproduced this w/o it (another reason why the GPU falls off the bus is the bus…)

No it was a prebuilt PC I never touched The Nvidia Card

Did you inspect it when you first got it? (Something might have loosened during transport)
