[SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Hello,

I did a pacman -Syu today.  Last time I did it may have been 2 weeks ago.  Ever since I rebooted after the update, there are extremely obnoxious flickering black horizontal lines appearing sporadically all over the X display.  This is observed in all applications.  I tried 2 different window managers and the issue was present with both.

The recent update does not appear to have touched my graphics driver or X, but did pull in a new kernel.

I use a Radeon RX 5600 card with the amdgpu driver.  My display is actually a Lontium HDMI->component converter.  I have a second display too: an old LG L226WT monitor.  This second display does NOT exhibit the problem!

I found this post from years ago: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=246679 but discovered that the EDID for my display device already has YCbCr disabled.  Despite that, I might've gone ahead and tried that method anyway, but discovered wxEDID does not give me a "recalc checksum" option, and gave up on that avenue for the time being.

I assume this is a newly-introduced bug in something, maybe the kernel, but am not sure what to do.

Thanks for any help!

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Did you also update mesa and does the problem exist w/ the LTS kernel?

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Mesa was already at the latest version and didn't need to be updated.

I hadn't even thought of trying linux-lts.  I just did... it works fine!  So that confirms it's something wrong with the new kernel then, I guess.

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

The idea was to downgrade mesa because there're known issues w/ mesa 21.xx (but there's no update crossing your 2W frame)

Because of the converter thing and HDMI, try to disable the audio signal:

amdgpu.audio=0

Otherwise, those are the power saving things (though there're reports that disabling dpm will just not activate any output and runpm/bapm are mostly notebook relevant)

amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

I am using mesa 21.  I could try to downgrade to 20 and see if that breaks everything... you think it's worth a try?

Confirmed that amdgpu.dpm=0 prevents video.  All those other options appear to have no effect on the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Current is "mesa 21.2.1-1" and the suggested problems arrived after "mesa 21.1.6-1"
You can try to downgrade to 21.1.6-1 but since that update doesn't cross the critical time frame and you already linked it to the kernel, I've little hope there (the best bet would actually have been "amdgpu.audio=0"… - ie. the articfacts being some audio signal, botched by the converter)

This might be related: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1989489
I downgraded mesa to 21.1.6-1 and issue is gone.

The linked bug is an intel iris bug, I don't have any issues here on amdgpu/radeon_si FWIW.

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Since there was no solution, I permanently switched to linux-lts as mentioned above, and that fixed the problem until... TODAY!

A recent update to the linux-lts kernel appears to have tragically brought the problem there too!  Now there seems to be no workaround.  I wonder if there's something about that latest linux-lts update that contains whatever caused the problem.  Any and all ideas very greatly appreciated!

Also, I've observed a new detail: when I leave the image on the screen constant, the flickering black lines repeat in the exact same pattern over and over, with a period of 5-10 seconds.  I'm not sure what this means.

Ooh, one more fascinating detail: I think the problem only occurs when the mouse is on that monitor.  When I move the mouse off that screen, the problem suddenly stops!  I didn't notice that before, but it seems consistent so far.  So it's something to do with the mouse!

Have you tried (or considered trying) wayland?  I ended up ditching X due to unresolvable graphics issues.

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

It would certainly be interesting to see whether wayland exposes the same problem, but the entire thing smells like some power saving feature in the amdgpu kernel module to me (even more so because of the pointer relevance)

@Xezlec, please post the xorg log, the output of "xrandr -q" and if you're a using a compositor: kill it. And if you don't, try running xcompmgr.

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

I would be quite sad to have to resort to wayland, for numerous reasons.  I dearly hope things have not sunk that far.

No, not using a compositor, or desktop environment of any kind, just Xorg and fluxbox.

Regarding a power-saving feature, I'm not sure exactly what you mean but it isn't something that happens after a delay or anything.  It is instantly happening when X comes up.

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

The settings we tried in #4

Please try to
a) install and run xcompmgr and see whether that has any impact
b) remove xf86-video-amdgpu (you'll be using the modesetting driver directly on the amdgpu kernel module then)

Why is there only one output listed in the xrandr output?
Do you get the artifacts on the component output if it's the only output attached?
What's on the other end of that adapter? TV? PAL or NTSC?

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Sorry, I'm swamped this week but will certainly try both those things the first time I have a few spare minutes.

xcompmgr is a compositor, isn't it?  How could adding a compositor help?  Seems like an unnecessary component for a simple GUI.  Probably something I don't understand here?

The reason there was only one output listed by xrandr was that the other monitor was turned off at the time, as it often is.  I think that also answers your question about getting artifacts when it's the only output.

What's on the other end is a TV.  NTSC.

Yes. The indirection might (anecdotally) actually cover the problem (notably iff it is only a multiscreen issue) but also help to isolate the problem.

I think that also answers your question about getting artifacts when it's the only output.

No. One might assume that you would not exclusively use an artifacting output, but this kind of assumption is where "assume" makes an ass out of u and me…
Being exact and elaborative is important because you're our only vector to your situation.

In any event, please post the xrandr output for the compromised situation - ideally we'd also have one for a "good" kernel.
Also try to set the refresh for the output to 59.94 because that's NTSC/color - 60Hz is b&w…

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

xcompmgr worked ok (cute effects!), but did not fix the problem.

Uninstalling xf86-video-amdgpu and using modesetting also worked ok, but did not fix the problem.

Apologies, I have a below-average verbal IQ even by American standards.  After slowly re-reading the above comment half a dozen times, I think you're asking whether the monitor that is active is the one with the problem?  If so, then yes it is.

Ok, did that and verified that the rate did change as intended.  Worked just as well as 60, but did not fix the problem.

However!  I noticed another interesting detail during all this: before I run my usual startup xrandr command to fix the horrible overscan, everything is fine!  The problem only appears after the xrandr command!  Here is that command:

xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --set underscan on --set "underscan vborder" 50 --set "underscan hborder" 95

Unfortunately, the overscan is so extreme that I can't live without that command (unless there's another trick out there to make X use only a portion of the screen).

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

The signal is too high for some element in the chain (likely the adapter)
1. Try to disable the overscan in the TV - this is preferable to anything else
2. if that's absolutely not possible for sure, add a modeline w/ reduced blanking and use that; https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xrandr … esolutions

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

I wish my TV had options at that level of detail!

Ok, I'll play with the modeline.  I had assumed any change to the modeline to deal with the overscan would do the same thing that xrandr command does.  Can you tell me what you mean about the signal being "too high"?

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

"You're trying to press too much information through the output".

% cvt12 1280 720 60
# 1280x720 @ 60.000 Hz (CVT) field rate 59.855 Hz; hsync: 44.772 kHz; pclk: 74.50 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
% cvt12 1280 720 60 -r
# 1280x720 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.979 Hz; hsync: 44.444 kHz; pclk: 64.00 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00_rb1" 64.00 1280 1328 1360 1440 720 723 728 741 +hsync -vsync
% cvt12 1280 720 60 -b
# 1280x720 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.999 Hz; hsync: 44.460 kHz; pclk: 60.47 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00_rb2" 60.47 1280 1288 1320 1360 720 727 735 741 +hsync -vsync

I guess you're adding 100px vertically and 190px horizontally. Look at the pclk:

% cvt12 $((1280+2*95)) $((720+2*50)) 60
# 1464x820 @ 60.000 Hz (CVT) field rate 59.812 Hz; hsync: 50.960 kHz; pclk: 98.25 MHz
Modeline "1464x820_60.00" 98.25 1464 1544 1696 1928 820 823 833 852 -hsync +vsync
% cvt12 $((1280+2*95)) $((720+2*50)) 60 -r
# 1464x820 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.825 Hz; hsync: 50.493 kHz; pclk: 82.00 MHz
Modeline "1464x820_60.00_rb1" 82.00 1464 1512 1544 1624 820 823 833 844 +hsync -vsync
% cvt12 $((1280+2*95)) $((720+2*50)) 60 -b # <================== try to add the following modeline
# 1470x820 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.999 Hz; hsync: 50.639 kHz; pclk: 78.49 MHz
Modeline "1470x820_60.00_rb2" 78.49 1470 1478 1510 1550 820 830 838 844 +hsync -vsync

Does the 1440x900 resolution work (w/o overscan compensation)?

cvt12 1440 900 60
# 1440x900 @ 60.000 Hz (CVT) field rate 59.887 Hz; hsync: 55.935 kHz; pclk: 106.50 MHz
Modeline "1440x900_60.00" 106.50 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Sadly, the new modeline does not work.  TV says "no signal".  The 1440x900 resolution also does not work even without overscan compensation.  "No signal" again.  In fact, it seems like none of the other modes I try work.

This hypothesis makes some sense, but if the "bitrate" is the problem, then why does it depend on the mouse and the kernel version?

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

Sorry, I meant to try this modeline

% cvt12 1280 720 60 -b
# 1280x720 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.999 Hz; hsync: 44.460 kHz; pclk: 60.47 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00_rb2" 60.47 1280 1288 1320 1360 720 727 735 741 +hsync -vsync

The 1464x820 ones won't work and were meant to illustrate the pclk demands only.
I cannot really explain the kernel/mouse situation other than that the cursor is rendered at a later stage and exposes a problem with recent versions of the amdgpu module - for "reasons"…

W/ xf86-video-amdgpu you could try 'Option "SWcursor" "True"'
https://man.archlinux.org/man/extra/xf8 … mdgpu.4.en
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU … ut_latency (for configlet illustration - I don't think pageflipping will be relevant, but while at it, you could try to disable that as well)

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

There's hardware cursor rendering now?!  This concept offends me... how can such a thing possibly need to exist?!  Computers were already fast enough to draw the cursor in software in the 1980s!

Sure enough, turned that off, problem completely solved!

I'm perfectly happy with this resolution, no need to try that modeline unless you are curious.

Thank you for your constant attention and expertise during all this.  I learned a bunch of things I didn't know.  If you're ever in Austin I owe you a beer!

Re: [SOLVED] Flickering black lines in X after updating today

I guess what you're seeing are actual artifacts from the cursor rendering because the driver ignores or miscalculates the overscan correction when it injects it into the scanout buffer.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

It doesn't need to, but it is an enormous efficiency gain on systems that support it.  Cursors (generally) move and need to be redrawn far more often than the rest of the fame - often several orders of magnitude more often.  Without hardware cursors, the whole frame needs to be redrawn every time the cursor moves, or there needs to be damage tracking and redrawing of chunks of the frame each time the cursor moves.  With hardware cursors, the frame image data stays exactly as it is (no buffer swapping needed) while just the cursor is drawn on another layer.  There can also be significant benefits for smooth cursor movement under load as the cursor moves independently of any frame updates - so if rendering of frames slows a software cursor will lag but a hardware cursor wouldn't.

And this isn't a new idea - in fact it's a very old idea of sprites from prior to 1980!
