[not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

Hi all.
My PC is rather capable but since a few months I am having issues with X while using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi.

CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz
GPU: TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 01)
RAM: 24GiB
Kernel: 5.14.14-zen1-1-zen (linux-zen@archlinux) (gcc (GCC) 11.1.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.36.1) #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Wed, 20 Oct 2021 21:35:17 +0000
DE: KDE Frameworks Version 5.87.0 / Qt Version 5.15.2 / Plasma 5.23.2-1

What I see is that under some circumstances (I am not 100% sure I can reproduce), anything using X for I/O gets lagging and stuttering.
For example, watching Youtube gives me sometimes lagging video but good quality audio.
Even typing into Konsole brings me back to the 9600 baud era, while downloading a file via wget or curl gives me full steam speed.
From dmesg I can grep this:

[ 0.792176] i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] VT-d active for gfx access
[ 0.792277] i915 0000:00:02.0: vgaarb: deactivate vga console

It looks like the i915 driver is doing fine.
From /var/log/Xorg.0.log I get this:

Also X looks fine besides 2 things:

1. "(EE) AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed"
2. "(EE) event26 - Logitech USB Keyboard: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 33ms, your system is too slow"

But I am not sure these could be the problem.
Switching to a different USB keyboard doesn't help.
After a while I also start getting "lagging behind" errors for the mouse (I am more a keyboard user than a mouse one).
If I switch to the character based console (CTL-ALT-F2) , keyboard I/O shows usual instantaneous responsiveness.
Switching back to X/KDE brings me back to the issue.
I also see that my infrared camera is identified as a keybaord!
The CPU (I can sport 8 cores) isn't usually that overloaded (load avg < 4) but, I can see via htop than the browser gets to 100+% CPU usage.

Any hint to troubleshoot (and maybe fix) this?

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

Remove xf86-video-intel and any configuration files you created for it as it's a buggy unmaintained mess.

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

I did that and also commented out The configuration I have in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf:

#Section "Device"
# Identifier "Intel Graphics"
# Driver "intel"
# #Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
#EndSection

Now the DE is barely usable.
Shall I also disable other drivers (like KMS)?

No you want KMS being used, repost the current xorg.log and

glxinfo -B
qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.supportInformation

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

Is this a problem when you suspend the compositor (Shift+Alt+F12)?

If I idsable it (with the shortcut) it becomes responsive!
So, what's the recipe for the magic potion?
Shall I disable compositing?

It could be.
Until 1 or 2 months ago that wasn't happening.
Of course I am not using any nvidia or amd blob. I am not sure about the i915 driver (compiled or blob):

i915 3198976 54
i2c_algo_bit 16384 1 i915
intel_gtt 24576 1 i915
ttm 90112 1 i915
video 53248 1 i915
drm_kms_helper 331776 1 i915
cec 81920 2 drm_kms_helper,i915
drm 634880 16 drm_kms_helper,i915,ttm

But, at least in my case, it's not multitasking-related and only happens (seems to happen?) when I make use of the browsers.
Any other non-X process seems to go smooth (audio, network, console-based interaction).
How do I keep the compositor off, as it seems to be linked to the issue?

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

kcmshell kwin (the kwin dialog in system settings) used to have a setting for that.

You've a different GPU but also the effect stack doesn't seem to matter.
If it's not because of the dualhead, I assume it's somewhere in the general GL context (and we can't test the xrender backend…)

I cannot find that program in any package.
Maybe is it System settings --> Display and Monitor --> Compositor?
My current setup is:
Enable compositor on startup: yes
Scale method: smooth
Rendering backend: OpenGL 2.0
Latency: balance
Tearing prevention: Automatic
Keep window thumbnails: Only for shown windows
Allow applications to block compositing: yes

Is it enough to flag first option to false?

Unluckily my limited knowledge about the graphics stack doesn't allow me make full sense of that post.
Surely I only have Intel GPU , I have disabled all "effects" and I only have a "blinking cursor" and "task manager animation".
To my understanding and tests it's certainly related to X/KDE and that wasn't happening earlier.

Yes.

You just need to try to export that environment variable…

So your suggested workaround is to both disable the compositor and setup that variable?
Or maybe try one and then the second and maybe finally both?

If the environment variable helps, you won't have to ditch the compositor.

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

I wonder if this is still a side effect of the broken iris GL driver? Not sure whether tigerlake ever had i965 support but maybe going with the old revert might help. I'll have to recheck on my skylake laptop though I might not be entirely up to date there.

Edit: Something else I'm seeing, I doubt the OGL2  path is well tested anymore, can you reproduce if you switch this to the OGL3.1 renderer?

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

What I see at the moment is that fonts show temporary artifacts during text updates in Konsole but not in borwsers (I tested Falkon and Vivaldi).
Anything else seems to be just fin.
Later today I will have to use heavier web apps (like MS Teams) that showed stuttering and lagging and will report back here.

I think that's just his/her perception while I can tell for sure that multitasking is working. Just X/KDE stuff is slow.

Lagging is still there. I think it's lagging less, but still lagging.
During a call with Teams (web app) I could notice slow keyboard echo reponses, even thoug the loadavg was < 3 with 8 cores.
Switching to terminal console didn't show any keyabord lagging.

Is this w/ KWIN_USE_BUFFER_AGE=0, it i965 GL driver OpenGL 3.0 or all of the above?
My last guess on the other thread was to try to disable vsync.

I do have KWIN_USE_BUFFER_AGE=0.
kernel mod i915 is loaded.
OpenGL 3.0 ... should be YES as I see:
extra/mesa 21.2.4-1 [0B 100.26MiB] [Installed]

Re: [not really SOLVED] Slow X when using Chrome/Chromium/Vivaldi

"i965" and that has nothing to do w/ the kernel module, see the link V1del posted:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ver_(i965)
Also the GL path can be configured in kwin compositor settings, that's not related to "I have mesa installed" at all.

As I said, my knowledge about the graphic stack is rather limited...
OK. I setup MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965 and now I am going to test it.
I am still not sure where to setup that OpenGL 3.0. Is that in the systemsettings for the compositor?

Supposingly. I don't use KDE.
