Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

Hi, I am a first-time user of Arch, and a few days ago I installed Arch on my new laptop and so far everything is working, however I'm having some performance issues.

This manifests primarily in video playback. Using mpv or vlc to play 4k 60fps video on the built-in display causes the fans to spin up loudly and I have occasional frame drops. CPU use in htop is ~30% and consulting "intel_gpu_top" shows both mpv and vlc are using hardware video decode correctly (~30% "Video" usage), however the problem seems to be that "Render/3D" is pegged at 100%. This problem is amplified when using my 4k 60Hz external monitor and appears even for 1080p 60fps playback. It seems the "Render/3D" load is highly dependent on the total resolution of all active displays (this is not surprising), but this means any video playback causes at least some issues with my external display connected.

My goal is to play 4k 60fps content on the external monitor, however given playback barely works on the lower resolution built-in display, the framedrops are constant on the external display, even with the internal display disabled to lower the GPU workload. Additionally, I have occasional glitches on the external 4k monitor when playing lower quality (720p or 1080p 30fps) video on the built-in display. By "glitches", I mean it appears part of a single frame is blank/torn and the audio drops out briefly when it's sent over HDMI to the external display. These glitches never occur when using the built-in display alone or when using both displays but not playing any video (i.e. only productivity tasks).

Assuming this is not too large of an ask of my hardware (see below), my impression is that this would be a driver issue, Xorg issue, or problem with my desktop environment/display manager.
Driver: I am using the latest i915 driver (see "inxi -G" output below) and have not installed xf86-video-intel as recommended for the Cinnamon DE (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/cinnamon ).
Xorg: I have not made an "xorg.conf" or adjusted any settings as otherwise everything worked "out of the box". My "Xorg.0.log" is given below
DE: Cinnamon + LightDM -- again this worked out of the box with "lightdm-gtk-greeter" starting X and loading Cinnamon.

Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction or if this is simply the best I'm going to get out of the hardware. I've read https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_graphics and a number of other forum threads here and elsewhere, but I have not found anything that has improved video playback for me yet. This includes forcing the xf86-video-driver and specifying the "Tearfree" option as suggested in many guides/forum posts including here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_graphics#Tearing. The xf86-video-driver had identical video playback performance but doesn't play nicely with Cinnamon as expected (it works but I get occasional graphical glitches without any GPU load unlike before). One interesting difference is that the "Blitter" line in "intel_gpu_top" showed usage whereas before it was always 0%, but this did not produce any better performance.

Please let me know if I've left out any important information/logs that you'd like me to post, and if you have suggestions on how to improve my performance.

Re: Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

I'd first and foremost drop cinnamon and try openbox to rule out that the actual stall is in the compositor.

Re: Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

Thanks for the reply!

I removed cinnamon and installed openbox (without any DE on top) and the CPU/GPU use was the same.

I did notice that shrinking the video window reduced the GPU use--not a surprise necessarily but more information.

I did also try all the options in cinnamon for "disable compositing for full-screen windows" and "VSync method" and these made no difference.

So this seems to suggest it isn't the compositor if I understand correctly.

Re: Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

If you face the same situation w/ the uncomposited openbox, the muffin compositor won't be the problem, no.

You could try to
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … on_(VSYNC)
but if the window size impacts the render/3d load (significantly) I'm not too optimistic for that.

Then there's
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ver_(i965)

and ulitmately
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … RI3_issues

On a stretch,
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … nable_fbc)
might help

Re: Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

Ok, I had tried some of these before posting and tried them all again just in case.

Disable VSYNC - No effect
i965 Driver - Video playback broken, cinnamon reports it's using software rendering. I believe I read somewhere the i965 driver is not compatible with 11+ gen intel GPUs, though I could be wrong. Either way a step backwards just following the instructions on the wiki.
Disable DRI3 - This may have had a small improvement, but still nowhere near being able to playback 4k 60fps video. I may have imagined any perceived difference.
Enable fbc - No effect

I've also tried this with no effect: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_graphics#Tearing
And changing the "AccelMethod" to UXA (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_graphics#Xorg_configuration ), which again caused problems. This may be because it requires the xf86-video-intel driver to be loaded (?), so I could try that combination.

Either way, so far no dice. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Following thread, same laptop. Finding a way to get it to work.

Re: Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

I can provide an update on this since some time has passed.

If your system is fully up-to-date and you have the correct Intel drivers installed, I have found that since I made this post that there has been significant improvement to the i915 and mesa drivers (at least for this hardware). Things are still not perfect when the total screen resolution is very high, however:

1. Using a video player with hardware decoding support configured (I am using mpv) allows for smooth 4k60Hz playback on an external screen when I have the built-in screen disabled.
2. 4k30Hz content will run fine while also using the built-in display, and I no longer have any stuttering, tearing, or frame drops when playing a video in the built-in screen and using the other display for productivity work.

Neither of these use cases were working correctly when I made my original post. I'm not sure if you have had the same results, but after I was unable to find any better settings simply waiting for updates has shown steady improvement so far. One thing I should point out is that I did not have trouble running light games at lower resolutions, for example I had a good enough experience running "Ori and the Blind Forest" with Steam's Proton compatibility layer at 1440p. If you have issues at lower resolutions you may have a different problem.

One suggestion I can offer is that I got marginally better performance by switching to KDE rather than using Cinnamon--I believe due to the different compositor. I did not do an exhaustive search of compositors/desktop environments but KDE worked the best for me on this hardware. I have continued to use Cinnamon+Muffin though and that is working for my use case.

I also tried Linux Mint and Ubuntu to see if performance was similar to Arch and had a worse experience on Debian-based setups. If my assumption that the updated drivers have made the difference is correct then that makes sense as these are less bleeding-edge options with older versions of the kernel and Intel drivers.

Hope that helps at least with context or to narrow down what may be your issue. For me I just keep waiting for sweet driver updates that have kept improving the situation, and my use case is working well enough.

Re: Poor Video Playback -- High "Render/3D" Intel GPU Usage

I have a similar issue, I have a macbook pro 2015 with intel iris P5200 integrated GPU and amd m370x discrete GPU. when I' using the integrated gpu while connecting to a external 4k monitor, there is a very high render/3D usage in intel_gpu_top, make it very sluggish on the external monitor.
my solution is change to the discrete GPU in exchange of shorter battery life.
The only explanation is the intel gpu is NOT sufficient to drive an external 4k monitor, although that sounds unreasonable to me.

I've heard sentiments that having external 4K on a laptop is a lot of pixels to push for the poor Intel gpu
